Stop the mining of sand and gravel in the city of Atoka

The Memphis Sand and Gravel (MSG) company has proposed a 15 year project to mine sand and gravel within the confines of the city limits of Atoka. The project site is surrounded by narrow and dangerous two lane roads which they must use as haul roads. These roads are major arteries in and out of Atoka and the traffic load is already high%2C approaching 8000 vehicles per day. The addition of 200 semi loads of aggregate leaving the site per day will place the citizens of Atoka in undue danger.
We hereby petition the Atoka Mayor and Board of Aldermen to remove the mining and quarrying special permit language from the FAR (Forestry%2C Agriculture and Residential) District zoning ordinance%2C Title 14-201%2C Article 5%2C Section 5.3%2C and then to add it to Title 14-201%2C Article 11%2C Section 11.2 of the zoning ordinance M%2C (Industrial) district.
The City Government of Atoka serves to protect the welfare of it's citizens%2C not the interests of corporations .
