Don't let the Bulgarian government destroy Pirin National Park!

Pirin National Park is so beautiful. It's impossible to fully capture it in words. Sweeping blue skies, crisp mountain peaks, lush green pastures where horses calmly graze - none of these images can capture its unique and irreplaceable splendour. Now The World Heritage committee has flagged this Bulgarian site as being at risk from both encroachment by ski facilities and increased industrial-scale logging. Nearly 60 per cent of Bulgaria’s Pirin National Park could be opened to logging thanks to a new government plan. Yet the committee is failing to take action to protect the park.

Please sign this petition to demand that the NESCO World Heritage Committee do everything they can to stop the Bulgarian government from destroying this irreplaceable natural wonder.

“Pirin is one of Europe’s few untouched treasures. It has dramatic mountain landscapes, pristine glacial lakes, trees over 1,000 years old, and is home to bears and wolves,” said Lubomir Kostadinov of WWF-Bulgaria, who addressed the committee, which represents 192 countries that are party to the World Heritage Convention.

“The international community has made a mistake to not to impose sufficient environmental safeguards or international oversight of this threatened World Heritage site. Today’s decision places Pirin National Park in peril.”

Please sign this petition to demand that NESCO World Heritage Committee reconvene and commit to protecting Pirin National Park. We must let them know that we expect them to do their job, and save irreplaceable sites of biodiversity and beauty from being destroyed.

NESCO World Heritage Committee:

I am writing today to urge you to intervene to protect Pirin National Park from excessive logging and ski facility developments.

This is an irreplaceable and beautiful site that you have recongised as being at risk.

Without your intervention, this unique place will soon be lost for good.
