Tell Congress to Phase Out Atrazine

  • by: Judith B.
  • recipient: United States Congress

Atrazine, a weedkiller with limited usefulness, causes health and reproduction problems in humans and animals. Although it is now banned in the European Union, the chemical is still in widespread use throughout the United States.

Even at very low levels, the herbicide has been linked to low sperm counts in men, sterility in frogs, and cancers in mammals, including humans. Scariest of all, atrazine leaks into drinking water. A recent study found the chemical in 80% of water samples near the fertilized sites, which puts the majority of the population at risk.

It also lingers for a very long time. Fifteen years after France banned the chemical, atrazine is still being detected.

There is no reason to continue the use of a dangerous herbicide, especially when more effective, less persistent and much safer alternatives exist.

Tell Congress to stop putting the American people, animals and environment at risk and start phasing out atrazine immediately.

We the undersigned ask that you begin a phase-out of the herbicide atrazine as a matter of urgency. The risks of this herbicide, which include low sperm counts and an increased risk of prostate and breast cancer in humans and similar reproductive problems and health problems in amphibians and fish, outweigh its limited advantages, especially as much safer and less persistent alternatives are widely available. We ask that Congress take steps to protect the American people and the environment from a serious yet completely avoidable and unnecessary danger.
Thank you for your attention
