Compassion in Crisis: Stand with Haitian Nationals in Sint Maarten

I am writing to request your support for a critical humanitarian appeal that holds profound importance not only for the Haitian Association of Sint Maarten (HASMA) but for the broader community and the principles of compassion and unity that bind us together.

At the heart of this appeal is the urgent need to suspend the apprehension and subsequent deportation of Haitian nationals in Sint Maarten, a matter that resonates with deep humanitarian concerns. Haiti is currently grappling with an unfolding humanitarian crisis characterized by widespread gang violence, political instability, and an acute shortage of basic necessities. Millions of Haitians are facing dire circumstances, deprived of access to food, clean water, and shelter. The crisis in Haiti has drawn the attention of international organizations, including the United Nations, leading them to call upon all nations in the Americas to suspend the forced returns of Haitian nationals and implement measures that ensure their safety and well-being.

Our plea is in strict alignment with the recent statement by the UN CERD Acting Chairperson and international organizations such as the AssociaƟon of American States (OAS) and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). These organizations have underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the human rights risks faced by Haitians during their journeys, including arbitrary detention, physical and sexual violence, and human trafficking.

The appeal extends beyond a legal obligation; it embodies our shared values and the interconnectedness of the Americas and the Caribbean region. Haiti's pivotal role as the first independent black nation, symbolizing freedom and justice, and its continued support in the global fight for liberty, places a moral debt upon us to extend our hand in solidarity during this time of need. In times of distress, the international community and our fellow Caribbean states have consistently demonstrated that we look out for one another, reflecting the spirit of unity and mutual support that defines our region.

To amplify our appeal and create a collective voice, we have initiated a petition.
