Protect Our Forests!

The Bush administration recently proposed to Congress an amendment which will remove environmental protections from our forests and increase logging. This amendment is the single greatest threat to our forests since the Salvage Rider of 1995, which waived environmental laws and opened up thousands of acres of untouched wildlands to unrestricted logging.

Please tell the President and his administration that you oppose this plan and to keep the Interior Appropriations bill free of riders that would waive environmental laws and lead to increased logging in our national forests. Please send a letter today and ask your friends and family to send one too!

MORE INFO:
The Senate could soon pass legislation that contains an amendment that would suspend laws that protect our national forests from unrestricted logging.

The amendment is masquerading as a "solution" to wildfire control on our national forests, but in reality will allow timber companies to log in some of our most pristine national forest areas, fragmenting habitat and destroying wild places.

Wildfire and its threat to homes and communities is a very real problem; but scientists and policy makers agree it can be addressed without sacrificing our wild forests and the wildlife that depend on them. Science tells us that the quickest and best way to protect communities from wildfire is to clear flammable brush and small trees away from the areas right around homes. The legislation Congress is considering would suspend environmental protections, allow logging deep in the forest far from communities, and restrict the public’s right to appeal any of these decisions about our public lands.

Please sign this petition and send a strong message to the President and his administration that we can protect homes and communities without suspending environmental protections.. Logging without laws must not be allowed!

26,205  12:45 pm PDT, May 26 Erika Dofelmier WA The environment MUST be protected to give generations to come quality of life on this planet. Environmental degredation is oftentimes irreversible so we must act NOW to protect the environment! Unrestricted logging takes place without environmental impact studies of the area, without concern for biodiversity in that area, with no regard for the age or environmental importance of particular stands, etc. The national forests are national property--THEY BELONG TO CITIZENS--NOT CORPORATIONS!!!! And citizens overwhelmingly want to preserve their forests for us all to enjoy, so as true democratic leaders you should listen to your constituents. the environment is essential to our quality of life in this country and in this world. 26,198  9:39 am PDT, May 25 April Neilson CA Let's look harder...who buys this wood? Is it an industry that is doing its part as responsible corporate citizens or is a lot of the wood yield being wasted or sold to Japan where old growth hardwoods gain the best price? Forests are not infinite. If they are destroyed by irresponsible logging practices...everyone loses, especially future generations. WE DEPEND ON PUBLIC SERVANTS TO DO A JOB THAT UPHOLDS THE HIGHEST PUBLIC GOOD, not just the interests of one or two sectors. We live in a world today where our dependency on the environment is clear. The impact of polluting the neighborhood we live in, or that someone else lives in (even if downstream) cannot be escaped.
26,197  7:07 pm PDT, May 24 Anonymous VA The environment matters to all beings, human and animal alike. We cannot put money before the environment or we are all doomed. If a forest is logged, it is no longer a forest! The heavy equipment destroys the forest for years, and the whole ecosystem is altered for years. He is supposed to be for the people, by the people, not for industry, because of money.
26,196  1:12 pm PDT, May 24 Daniel Berger NV We live on planet Earth, and we'll suffer later for the mess we do now. Because I know what human greed can do to a defenseless forest. His chances of getting reelected in 2004 depend on things like that.
26,195  2:40 pm PDT, May 23 Anonymous FL   because I breathe the air that comes from the forests of the world. Don't you? And doesn't the president He shouldn't! He doesn't care! He rides in his fancy cars and takes his fancy vacations! His children go to fancy schools! Why would he care? BECAUSE he said he would, and we (not me) voted him in to do it.
26,194  5:30 am PDT, May 23 Anonymous NM   I care because it is a vital part if not the most vital part of our ecosystems. When it is damaged we are damaged. Greed Kills! He says he is here to protect us - well then protect the habitate that supports our life. Get it George? Probably not - since I am not one of your interest groups but part of the often referred to -FOCUS Group! George you are dumber than a box of rocks. Apologies to the rock family!

.>Stop “Logging without Laws”
Attn: President George W. Bush

The “logging without laws” fire rider must not pass.

Citizens have a right to be involved in determining how their forests should be managed. Legitimate fuel reduction work has nothing to fear from citizen involvement – we all agree that our first priority must be protecting communities, but we do not have to suspend environmental protections to do so!.

I ask you to oppose any effort to weaken or suspend environmental laws, such as the National Environmental Policy Act, which has been the cornerstone of environmental protections for more than three decades and guarantees a citizen's right to participate in decisions affecting our National Forests.

Please do all you can to ensure that community protection is the top priority of a national fire plan and that our environmental laws remain intact.
