Will the Buffalo Have a Home? Save Our Last Wild Grasslands
Target: Robert Sprentall, U.S.Forest Service
Sponsor: Sierra Club

pen nibSIGNATURES: 25,483

pen nibGOAL: 25,000

pen nibDEADLINE: 1-22-2002

The Sierra Club urges you to take a minute to help protect the home where the Buffalo roam!

RIGHT NOW, the U.S. Forest Service is deciding whether or not to protect our National Grasslands from oil rigs and off-road vehicles, and they want to hear from YOU! These public (taxpayer-owned) lands include the largest wild areas left in the Prairies of North America. Today, National Grasslands present one of the best opportunities to see the prairie wildlife that so impressed Lewis and Clark on their historic journey nearly 200 years ago.

How often does the government actually ask you for your opinion? Take a minute to tell the Forest Service to give our children a world where the deer and the antelope still play. Send your free official comment today and help save our last wild prairies!

****Comments must be received by January 22nd, 2002 to be included in the Official Record of Public Comments. The U.S. Forest Service will be reviewing comments in order to determine the future of the last American Grasslands**** ..... See full petition below.td>

25,467  7:34 am PST, Jan 2 Madeleine Jarvis CT It is very important to preserve natural areas all over this Earth if life is to survive. Many of us--including me--are concerned with preserving the rain forests, but have forgotten the places in our own country that need to be saved. The U.S.'s grasslands are just as important as the rain forests.

Most of us live in places where highways and skyscrapers are our only scenery and its nice to know that out there someplace, even if we do only see it when we travel, there is a land where roads cant reach and where animals are still free. Please protect our lands from cars, roads, rigs, and people. The animals need homes too!

.>Will the Buffalo Have a Home? Save Our Last Wild Grasslands
Petition Target: U.S. Forest Service,
National Grassland Planning Team,

I urge you to recommend all of the last remaining roadless areas in the National Grasslands of the northern plains be protected as wilderness. Most of our native prairie has been converted to farmland, cities and towns as well as oil fields. Less than 1% of the prairie still qualifies for wilderness and almost all of these areas are located on public lands, our national grasslands.

We urge you to protect these areas as wilderness for our families and for our future. With wilderness designation ranchers will continue to be allowed to graze these areas, but they would be protected from road building, oil and gas development, off-road vehicle use, and other destructive activities.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned
