Allow Health Care Patients Access to Therapy - Not Time Behind Bars

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Marijuana Policy Project
For thousands of years, marijuana has reduced symptoms for the seriously ill effectively, and has helped improve their quality of life. Dozens of medical and health organizations endorse or allow patients access to medical marijuana with their physicians’ approval. Marijuana has been used therapeutically to control pain, alleviate nausea and vomiting in cancer patients due to chemotherapy, treat wasting due to HIV/AIDS, combat muscle spasms associated with multiple sclerosis and more.

To date, 12 states have passed medical marijuana laws. While the laws differ from state to state, they all work to protect patients and caregivers from criminal charges associated with their medicine.

The bipartisan Hinchey-Rohrabacher amendment to the Commerce, Justice and Science appropriations bill would stop the U.S. Department of Justice from spending taxpayer money to arrest or prosecute legitimate patients -- and their caregivers -- in states where medical marijuana is legal.

Seriously ill patients have the right to effective therapies. To deny patients access to such a therapy is to deny them dignity and respect as persons.

Urge Congress to pass the Hinchey-Rohrabacher amendment and allow health care patients the medicine they need!

Dear Representative [Last Name],

Please vote for the Hinchey medical marijuana amendment to the Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations bill when it comes to the House floor for a vote.

The Hinchey amendment would prohibit the Justice Department -- including the DEA -- from spending funds to interfere with state medical marijuana laws.

Your support for this amendment would be consistent with the views of most Americans. Seventy eight percent of Americans support "making marijuana legally available for doctors to prescribe in order to reduce pain and suffering." (Gallup poll, 2005)

Since 1996, 12 states have enacted laws to protect patients afflicted with HIV/AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis and other serious diseases from arrest and prison. In fact, just last month the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), America’s second largest cancer charity and the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education, and patient services, endorsed medical marijuana access. In their June 2007 statement, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society “strongly urge[s] that in a state where patients are permitted to use marijuana medicinally for serious and/or chronic illnesses and a patient's physician has recommended its use in accordance with that state's law and that state’s medical practice standards, the patient should not be subject to federal criminal penalties for such medical use.”

The American Nurses Association has consistently supported protections for patients who use marijuana for medical purposes under their physicians’ supervision. They are joined by many other health care organizations, as well as thousands of doctors and health care professionals who are on record as supporting medical marijuana and opposing the arrest of patients who use medical marijuana.

I urge you to support the Hinchey amendment. Your vote of support will benefit tens of thousands of patients, and I will be immensely grateful. Thank you.

Sincerely,

The whole problem with marijuana is that it's almost impossible to gain profit from it (the large corporations that is). I'm willing to bet that there are more fatalities and injuries from presciption drugs than all the illlegal drugs combined. Capitalism and medicine do not mix. PEACE MO

Our jails are filled to the brim with marijuana users, and sellers. It's one of the reasons behind the sky-rocketing jail population in the United States, and thus, the need to build more. I say make it available for patients to have medical marijuana for treatment for their affliction!

Well, I dislike drugs, but if it helps them feel better than let them have it. I mean it's pretty natural. Just let them have it if it helps them

heaven forbid we use something that is NATURAL and that helps us in so many ways. i say by whatever non-harmful ways needed to get better/ or at least feel somewhat better, go for it! as long as it harms no one, let it be allowed.

Every drug produced today originated in nature- usually from plants. Synthesis, mass production and "control" / distribution are now used to make money for a huge "chain of hands" --- most assuredly at the EXPENSE of the CONSUMER. If we, the consumer, are the ones needing and paying for a treatment, we should be allowed to choose and use what WE want.

I had to use marinol when I had a deadly gastro-intestinal illness that kept me regurgitating and having diarrhea all day long. It was the only way I could eat. It was much less harmful than the cholesterol medicine I took that damaged my heart.

The framers of our constitution would be so disturbed to see the mockery that has been made of the "land of the free". To regulate what plants people can grow and what they can put into their bodies is absurd. Beyond this hypocrisy, however is something even more sinister, that people would be denied the medicines they need because of government bureaucrats. To ignore the scientific evidence and prevent doctors from offering their patients what is, in their educated opinion, the best treatment is immoral.

As a former hospice nurse I believe it is important to give terminally and chronically ill patients access to all the tools available to help them enjoy the days they have left. I support the use of marijuana for pain and nausea.

For some patients, marijuana is the only thing that works to stop their pain, nausea, etc. I find it deplorable and unethical that our govt denies these people's access to relief.

I lost a sister to Brain cancer and it would have helped her with the pain etc. I do not think it should be legalized for use under the age of 21 with the exception of use for medical reasons. Dagga (Streetname in South Africa) does inhibit personality growth and does make you feel tired, so I don't think kids should be allowed to use it freely until they understand what and how to use this powerful medicine. On the flipside if all governments get together and order a HUGE Study on the pros' and con's and then inform us the the masses on how and where to use this educating us abou the correct amounts and dosages; they can 1. Make a bit of tax money of it by selling it cheaply and creating a trade for it. 2. Educate people how to use it in cosmetics and other alternative uses 3. Thus Create jobs and lastly 4. Bring some hope (and a smile) to sick and sad people. Why and how can anybody ban and withhold such a wonderful and powerful natural GOD created medicine and tonic? Dope should be cheaply available and distributed to anyone who may enjoy vigour and good (better) health from it.... My theory is that Big Pharmaceutical Companies (WHOM DO SERVE A GREAT AND IMPORTANT ROLL IN SOCIETY) are hindering the legalization of this powerful and easily accessible plant as a recognised and freely available medicine as their products they produce have taken years to formulate are EXTREMLEY expensive and have cost Millions to manufacture and research. "Suddenly" (legalizations) along comes this little “miracle” plant that any farmer can produce in any country for next to nothing that helps (or cures) a whole long list of ailments..... AND IT'S NATURAL? They stand to loose billions. Think about it…Who is really behind the proscribe? I rest my tirade….
