Bush/Cheney: Don't Play Politics With Our Wildlife!

Target: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
The Bush/Cheney Administration's politically-motivated draft "recovery plan" for northern spotted owls threatens to undermine years of progress in protecting these owls and the old-growth forests they need to survive.

Urge officials at the Fish & Wildlife Service to scrap the current plan and reconvene the Northern Spotted Owl Recovery Team to develop a real recovery plan that benefits the spotted owl, not just the timber industry.

There's just a few days left to take action. The Fish & Wildlife Service will only be accepting comments on this draft recovery plan until this Friday, August 24th, so thank you for standing up for the northern spotted owl today.

Read our "fast facts" about northern spotted owls and the draft "recovery plan."

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and someone who cares about scientifically sound wildlife management, I urge you to withdraw the politicized draft recovery plan and reconvene the Northern Spotted Owl Recovery Team to draft a new plan based on scientific findings.

Spotted owl numbers are declining more rapidly than anticipated when the federal government added them to the endangered species list in 1990, and the loss of vital old-growth forest habitat remains one of the biggest threats to the northern spotted owl's recovery.

Dwindling by almost 4% per year, the spotted owl is at risk of declining to the point that the species would need to be "uplisted" from threatened to endangered. Some experts believe that there may be as few as 3,000 pairs left.

Given the continuing stresses and threats to this species, the northern spotted owl needs more old growth forest protection, not less.

I urge you to reconvene the Recovery Team of scientists and other experts from state and federal agencies and local stakeholder groups, to draft a new recovery plan for these beleaguered birds.

We simply can't afford to play politics when it comes to recovering rapidly declining species like the northern spotted owl.

Thank you for considering my views on this matter.

Sincerely,

It appears that USA Govt dont care a 'HOOT' about animals or birds or any creatures living there. Slowly the wild life habitate's of all YOUR animals, creatures and birds are reducing in huge numbers including the Spotted Owl. How can you rest? How can you face the World and shrug your shoulders and do nothing. WELL then its time to do something to save the animals/creatures/birds in low numbers or they will become extinct. Surely you would like your next generation to take the opportunity to see in the wild and have them totally in awe of these wonderful birds and creatures. Turn USA around on these issues and you will win more support I am sure.

Why can't we be kind and considerate human beings, and support life and our environment. Can we not limit our greed, and allow Mother Nature to care for all beings. The Owl is a valuable, beautiful bird, and why must we disturb its natural habitat???

A primary domestic agenda priority of President Bush (through his administrative agencies like the USFWL) is to assure that as many wildlife species as possible become extinct during his 2 terms, because corporate America spends too much money dealing with the very effective Endangered Species Act restrictions.
