Bush/Cheney: Don't Play Politics With Our Wildlife!

Target: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
The Bush/Cheney Administration's politically-motivated draft "recovery plan" for northern spotted owls threatens to undermine years of progress in protecting these owls and the old-growth forests they need to survive.

Urge officials at the Fish & Wildlife Service to scrap the current plan and reconvene the Northern Spotted Owl Recovery Team to develop a real recovery plan that benefits the spotted owl, not just the timber industry.

There's just a few days left to take action. The Fish & Wildlife Service will only be accepting comments on this draft recovery plan until this Friday, August 24th, so thank you for standing up for the northern spotted owl today.

Read our "fast facts" about northern spotted owls and the draft "recovery plan."

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and someone who cares about scientifically sound wildlife management, I urge you to withdraw the politicized draft recovery plan and reconvene the Northern Spotted Owl Recovery Team to draft a new plan based on scientific findings.

Spotted owl numbers are declining more rapidly than anticipated when the federal government added them to the endangered species list in 1990, and the loss of vital old-growth forest habitat remains one of the biggest threats to the northern spotted owl's recovery.

Dwindling by almost 4% per year, the spotted owl is at risk of declining to the point that the species would need to be "uplisted" from threatened to endangered. Some experts believe that there may be as few as 3,000 pairs left.

Given the continuing stresses and threats to this species, the northern spotted owl needs more old growth forest protection, not less.

I urge you to reconvene the Recovery Team of scientists and other experts from state and federal agencies and local stakeholder groups, to draft a new recovery plan for these beleaguered birds.

We simply can't afford to play politics when it comes to recovering rapidly declining species like the northern spotted owl.

Thank you for considering my views on this matter.

Sincerely,

If we are to survive as a specie we need to step back and reconsider what we are doing to Mother Earth. Leave our precious wildlife and the ecosystems to revive and survive what trauma has already been applied. Love and balance is essential for all to live in peace and harmony. There are too many who pay heed to greed as opposed to the gift of life and that which sustains it in all it's forms. Learn to treasure the wisdom and home of all elders and in turn teach the young to do the same by example. Bush/Cheney do not. Please do not allow them to continue the current destruction of all species, including their own. We are all interwoven within the tapestry of life..

I oppose the politically-motivated draft "recovery plan" because we need more old forests for these species to survive.Save the wildlife for your Great Granchildren to see.It would be such a shame to only see pictures of them in books like the "Dodo"

Old growth Forests MUST be conserved for the protection of our fast dwindling species including the spotted Owl.There are other ways of sustaining the timber industry without destroying the old growth Forests.

My wife and I have been California State Park docents for five years, doing nature studies with children, an ideal way to introduce kids to the importance of ecolological balance and to God's wonders. Help us preserve the natural world so that children will continue to have the chance to know the natural and the spiritual kingdom.

The health of our wildlife is a reflection of the health of our environment/world. We need to make tough decisions to protect what is most dear to us~our eco environment.

owls have a life too. no matter if they need our love/support or not, don't ruin their lives. keep their lives successful and allow them to strive and be wild as they were born to be, DO NOT ruin them because of your own pleasure/wants, wildlife matters more than anything else destructive.
