Stop the Seal Hunt

Target: Stephen Harper, Prime Minister and Michael Wilson, Ambassador to the United States
Sponsored by: International Fund for Animal Welfare
This year the Canadian government promised a more humane hunt. They said "Canada's seal hunt is humane, sustainable and responsible." They lied.

IFAW Hunt Observers were on the ground and in the air documenting the hunt since it opened on the 28th of March. Only days into the hunt they captured on camera instances where animals were shot and clearly left to suffer. They witnessed live seals hooked and dragged across the ice. And in one of the more disturbing moments they watched as a sealer wrote an expletive on the ice while a recently clubbed seal behind him started to move...obviously still alive.

Is this the Canadian government's idea of a more humane hunt? Please urge the Canadian Prime Minister and Canadian Ambassador to end the cruelty of the seal hunt. Take action today!

deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 50,000

Dear [Decision Maker]

I am deeply opposed to Canada's annual cruel, wasteful, and unsustainable commercial slaughter of harp seal pups.

Harp seals are facing a new threat -- global warming -- which is resulting in dramatically reduced ice coverage in the Gulf of St Lawrence and off Newfoundland.

Your government is on record stating it will take "real action" on global warming. And yet you have ignored the one tangible action your government could take to combat the effects of global warming -- dramatically reducing the seal hunt quota.

Apart from these serious conservation concerns shared by many Canadians, the seal hunt targets baby animals, a practice that is unacceptable to the majority of Canadians. In the past two years, 98% of the seals killed have been less than three months old. Severe cruelty has been witnessed and documented at the hunt during the past 30 years and incidents of cruelty are not decreasing.

It's unbearably cruel, it's not very profitable for the few New Foundlanders who do it, and it sets Canadians up to look like barbarians. Stop the seal hunt now.

ARE WE BECOMING LUNATICS? BUT I FIND THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE CARNIVORE BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY AND IN COURSE OF TIME THEIR ATTITUDE CHANGES -VIOLENCE BECOMES A PART AND PARCEL OF THEIR LIVES-

I cannot believe that anyone can still support the clubbing of defenseless animals. Not only is it inhumane but it makes us less then most animal species. Images of the hunt make me physically ill, and it scares me that certain people appear not to be bothered by those images. I always thought Canada to be the more intelligent part of North-America (seeing the tricks the US pulls), it makes me so sad to see that I'm mistaken. I hope that your governement will soon realise that animals don't need to speak our language to show they have feelings, I thinks the cries of the seals speak for themselves. And I hope someone will finally realise that we also are just animals, and maybe compare clubbing of baby seals to clubbing of a human baby, if it would make a pretty vest...

Please stop the seal hunts, we really need to start looking at how we abuse this planet and the animals that co-exist with us.

The seal hunt should be stopped because of the inhumane nature of it. Seals are a vital part of our northern ecosystems (which are already struggling as it is), and wiping them out is awful to hear about.

Animals are God's creatures too. That's all you need to know. People should be happy enough for beef and chicken...why do people need to hunt for seals?

Killing seals is cruel. It's heartless... It's simply wrong. We have much other materials for clothing, so why do you kill seals?

Seal Hunting is a horrifically cruel sport. Alaskans and Canadians don't need it to survive, therefore it is a very needless recreational activity and it is unfair that seals are having to suffer an unimaginably painful death. It is important that this "sport" is banned before more seals are brutually murdered.

It is absolutely inhumane and makes Canada seem like a cruel, barbaric nation. I have stopped traveling to Canada and am not making purchases from MEC and Roots while this horror continues.
