Stop the Seal Hunt

Target: Stephen Harper, Prime Minister and Michael Wilson, Ambassador to the United States
Sponsored by: International Fund for Animal Welfare
This year the Canadian government promised a more humane hunt. They said "Canada's seal hunt is humane, sustainable and responsible." They lied.

IFAW Hunt Observers were on the ground and in the air documenting the hunt since it opened on the 28th of March. Only days into the hunt they captured on camera instances where animals were shot and clearly left to suffer. They witnessed live seals hooked and dragged across the ice. And in one of the more disturbing moments they watched as a sealer wrote an expletive on the ice while a recently clubbed seal behind him started to move...obviously still alive.

Is this the Canadian government's idea of a more humane hunt? Please urge the Canadian Prime Minister and Canadian Ambassador to end the cruelty of the seal hunt. Take action today!

Dear [Decision Maker]

I am deeply opposed to Canada's annual cruel, wasteful, and unsustainable commercial slaughter of harp seal pups.

Harp seals are facing a new threat -- global warming -- which is resulting in dramatically reduced ice coverage in the Gulf of St Lawrence and off Newfoundland.

Your government is on record stating it will take "real action" on global warming. And yet you have ignored the one tangible action your government could take to combat the effects of global warming -- dramatically reducing the seal hunt quota.

Apart from these serious conservation concerns shared by many Canadians, the seal hunt targets baby animals, a practice that is unacceptable to the majority of Canadians. In the past two years, 98% of the seals killed have been less than three months old. Severe cruelty has been witnessed and documented at the hunt during the past 30 years and incidents of cruelty are not decreasing.

I love canada. I visit there all the time and want the live there when i'm older but I love seals even more. And if this seal hunt is what Canada does than why should I go there? Why should I support businesses and economies that support the killing of seals? This needs to stop

Imagine that you were killed with wooden clubs or guns by terrifying creatures. Then after the shooting and slaughter, you are skinned alive. Imagine what it would feel like, from the inside and out. You can only imagine it but cannot feel the pain of it. God didn't create these creatures for humans to kill them. God made them so they experience how wonderful life is. So why don't you let them to live and love. It won't hurt to stop the seal hunt. Also, what if you were taken away from your family or the ones you love without any notice or choice. Humans have choices, so why can't it be the same with seals. These word come from the heart, not the head. I hope you have a heart to at least have time to read this.

The seal hunt is inhumane and a blot on Canada' reputation. The EC is on the right track.

This act is probably the highest act of cruelty I have ever seen. Harp seals are already in danger thanks to global warming, they are trying so hard to survive, and these cruel, heartless people come into their home and kill them without blinking an eye. It kills me to see how people think of this as a sport & do it for profit. This needs to be stopped immediately, the harp seals are crying out for help.

Severe cruelty has been witnessed and documented at the hunt during the past 30 years and incidents of cruelty are not decreasing. This hunt only continues to exist because it is propped up by a range of government subsidies and tax-payers money. More and more countries around the world are adopting legislation to ban the import of seal products. Instead of investing in meaningful employment opportunities for Newfoundlanders, the federal government continues to fund and support a seasonal and wasteful seal hunt which draws national and international criticism to a proud region of Canada trying to build a reputation for high-tech research and first-class environmental tourism. I urge you to act immediately to end this unnecessary cruelty to seals and to restore Canada's pride as a humane and ecologically responsible society. Sincerely, Antonia Mayol Ferrer.

It is a cruel, unneccessary practice that NEEDS to be outlawed. There is no need for it and if some hunter came along and shot your dog, would you be mad??!! Well it's just the same with seals!!

This hunting is just too inhumane as it can be. Killing defensless animals unnecessarily. Like Mahatma Ghandi said "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by how well its animals are treated."

Out of all the things in this world humans can do wrong, how could we sink so low to the point where we kill the defensless for fun and sport. They can't wage war on us, so we have to stop and work on letting them live in peace just like you do for our country.
