Stop the Seal Hunt

This year the Canadian government promised a more humane hunt. They said "Canada's seal hunt is humane, sustainable and responsible." They lied.
IFAW Hunt Observers were on the ground and in the air documenting the hunt since it opened on the 28th of March. Only days into the hunt they captured on camera instances where animals were shot and clearly left to suffer. They witnessed live seals hooked and dragged across the ice. And in one of the more disturbing moments they watched as a sealer wrote an expletive on the ice while a recently clubbed seal behind him started to move...obviously still alive.
Is this the Canadian government's idea of a more humane hunt? Please urge the Canadian Prime Minister and Canadian Ambassador to end the cruelty of the seal hunt. Take action today!

I can't tell you why this should be stopped. I know why it must keep going. It isn't only because it is a tradition among the northern native people of our land. it is also because the population must be kept in hand. I agree with a government monitored system. I also understand that the government cannot be at every hung site at all moments. Cruelty is NEVER ok! and all hunters should know that Cruelty is NOT acceptable. Stop allowing foreigners into the seal hunt! Canadian Citizens only...and make them sign a waiver.

This hunt is inhumane, it is a barbaric and draconian practise that must stop immediately. The problem lies with weak willed and politically unmotivated politicians when in times when courage and innovation is required, instead they provide stale excuses and a default to the status quo. Dear [Decision Maker] I am deeply opposed to Canada's annual cruel, wasteful, and unsustainable commercial slaughter of harp seal pups. Harp seals are facing a new threat -- global warming -- which is resulting in dramatically reduced ice coverage in the Gulf of St Lawrence and off Newfoundland. Your government is on record stating it will take "real action" on global warming. And yet you have ignored the one tangible action your government could take to combat the effects of global warming -- dramatically reducing the seal hunt quota. Apart from these serious conservation concerns shared by many Canadians, the seal hunt targets baby animals, a practice that is unacceptable to the majority of Canadians. In the past two years, 98% of the seals killed have been less than three months old. Severe cruelty has been witnessed and documented at the hunt during the past 30 years and incidents of cruelty are not decreasing. view more This hunt only continues to exist because it is propped up by a range of government subsidies and tax-payers money. I think this practice is absolutely disgusting and animal cruelty. These creatures are beautiful and deserve to live instead of being clubbed and dragged. The hunt is not humane and should be stopped!! Surely Canada is better than this and a humane society? The sad thing is that the hunters actually look like they are enjoying themselves when they murder these poor defenceless creatures. I wonder how they would feel if I clubbed them over the head and dragged them along the ice? And if this practice continues I only hope that they come back in the next life as seals themselves. After all wouldnt u agree wot goes around comes around. Please please stop this slaughter!!!
