Stop the Seal Hunt

Target: Stephen Harper, Prime Minister and Michael Wilson, Ambassador to the United States
Sponsored by: International Fund for Animal Welfare
This year the Canadian government promised a more humane hunt. They said "Canada's seal hunt is humane, sustainable and responsible." They lied.

IFAW Hunt Observers were on the ground and in the air documenting the hunt since it opened on the 28th of March. Only days into the hunt they captured on camera instances where animals were shot and clearly left to suffer. They witnessed live seals hooked and dragged across the ice. And in one of the more disturbing moments they watched as a sealer wrote an expletive on the ice while a recently clubbed seal behind him started to move...obviously still alive.

Is this the Canadian government's idea of a more humane hunt? Please urge the Canadian Prime Minister and Canadian Ambassador to end the cruelty of the seal hunt. Take action today!

deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 50,000

Dear [Decision Maker]

I am deeply opposed to Canada's annual cruel, wasteful, and unsustainable commercial slaughter of harp seal pups.

Harp seals are facing a new threat -- global warming -- which is resulting in dramatically reduced ice coverage in the Gulf of St Lawrence and off Newfoundland.

Your government is on record stating it will take "real action" on global warming. And yet you have ignored the one tangible action your government could take to combat the effects of global warming -- dramatically reducing the seal hunt quota.

Apart from these serious conservation concerns shared by many Canadians, the seal hunt targets baby animals, a practice that is unacceptable to the majority of Canadians. In the past two years, 98% of the seals killed have been less than three months old. Severe cruelty has been witnessed and documented at the hunt during the past 30 years and incidents of cruelty are not decreasing.

What a cruel and inhumane action, for a civilized country, bludgeoning a defensive animal. This is true legalized animal cruelty. I no longer buy items from Canada. I will continue to boycott until this action is stopped.

Its inhumane to let us humans go on their territory kill these animals, their offsprings, just babies that are days, weeks old, with such rage and force, make them suffer, torcher them, just for their pelt to make some money. I believe animals have rights and how humans can take that away i just dont get it. They are wild animals, living, breathing, just like us. No one has the right to do this type of cruel actions against a child of the lord. They are just like us, they have a home, kids, how would these humans feel if this was done to them. Stop these are living creatures.

More and more countries around the world are adopting legislation to ban the import of seal products. Instead of investing in meaningful employment opportunities for Newfoundlanders, the federal government continues to fund and support a seasonal and wasteful seal hunt which draws national and international criticism to a proud region of Canada trying to build a reputation for high-tech research and first-class environmental tourism. I urge you to act immediately to end this unnecessary cruelty to seals and to restore Canada's pride as a humane and ecologically responsible society.

Seals need to be saved - they are a prime diet for Polar Bears so they have a hard enough time surviving. We certainly do NOT need humans killing them too.

As a Newfoundlander, I know well the tradition and history of the seal hunt. However, when my ancestors hunted seals they did so for their own survival, and within a decent quota. The current issue, I feel, relates not only to the cruelty issue, but mostly to the unsustainable quota that Ottawa has set for the hunt. The hunt is harming the biodiversity of the ocean, a biodiversity that Ottawa has already previously damaged with the unsustainable cod fishery. Newfoundlanders cannot allow another blow to their seafaring heritage. Lower the quota, and make the hunt truly cruelty free.
