Stop the Seal Hunt

This year the Canadian government promised a more humane hunt. They said "Canada's seal hunt is humane, sustainable and responsible." They lied.
IFAW Hunt Observers were on the ground and in the air documenting the hunt since it opened on the 28th of March. Only days into the hunt they captured on camera instances where animals were shot and clearly left to suffer. They witnessed live seals hooked and dragged across the ice. And in one of the more disturbing moments they watched as a sealer wrote an expletive on the ice while a recently clubbed seal behind him started to move...obviously still alive.
Is this the Canadian government's idea of a more humane hunt? Please urge the Canadian Prime Minister and Canadian Ambassador to end the cruelty of the seal hunt. Take action today!

Do you realize that these mammals, at 3 months old, are essentially the same as your child at 3 months? Do these mammals have natural enemies? YES (BESIDES the CANADIAN GOV'T.) harp seals are experiencing enough of a threat from our destruction of their environment through global warming. The hunting of these creatures needs to stop before they are destroyed as a species. The Canadian government is smart and efficient. They could, if they wanted to, create ecotourism, and help their people find other career paths that do not include this cruelty and slaughter. Please do the right thing.

This is a blot on Canada. Is it worth the lives of these innocents, the stain on Canada's reputation just to put several men on unemployment benefits, to "work" for a brief time? This is not work. It is murder. Did it ever occur to you politicians to actually retrain these people and get them involved in something worthwhile and permanent? This barbarous practice should have never happened. When it did, it should have been stopped years ago. I am ashamed of Canada in this regard. A country is judged on how it treats its most helpless. Are you so removed from life as you sit in your ivory tower that you cannot feel the pain that this practice inflicts? All for what? What possible good could this do? Most Canadians abhor this horrible practice. What does it take to make you stop it?

It's cruelty should be sufficient reason to stop the seal hunt. The fact that it continues though, indicates that the suffering of other beings is not sufficient reason for Canadian decision makers to stop it. The seal hunt will stop. But not without damage to Canada and the hunters before and after it does. Hard to believe that Russians are considered more decent than Canadians, but apparently this is so. At a time when Canada needs international support for maritime sovereignty, we are pariahs. It was sad and touching to hear the friends of the drowned sealers, and think about the PEIsland hunters who became seal rescuers, but nevertheless, they have been brutalized by cruelty and delayed in finding the decent living they deserve.
