Protect Humpbacks from Whaling

Target: Ryozo Kato, Ambassador of Japan
Sponsored by: International Fund for Animal Welfare
The Japanese Government is sending its whaling fleet into the protected waters of the Southern Ocean Sanctuary around Antarctica. And this year, Japan is threatening to add endangered humpback and fin whales to its target list!

The Japanese government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling.  In reality, this deadly program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

More than 30,000 whales have been killed since a global ban on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986. Japan must not expand its whaling program!

Tell Japanese Ambassador Ryozo Kato to immediately stop the senseless annual killing of whales, including the endangered Humpback.
deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 75,000

Last week, Japan agreed to temporarily end targeting humpback whales in this year's hunt.

Thanks to concerned citizens like you, the humpbacks are safe until they return to Japanese waters after this year's migraion. This is a step in the right direction, but there is still work to be done.

Please urge Japan to stand firm on its commitment to exclude humpback whales, and to end the hunt of all whale species!

Dear Mr. Ambassador,

Japan kills more than 1,400 whales every year despite a global ban on commercial whaling.

Your government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling. In reality, this deadly "scientific" whaling program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

[Your comment here]

I respectfully urge you to persuade your government to withdraw its announced plans to kill 50 humpback whales and to end its unlawful whaling program.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

We're in a position to buy a new car... and it certainly won't be a Japanese car unless your country stops this senseless killing! In fact, we'll be very careful about buying anything from Japan until whales are protected. And this from a man who holds an advanced belt in Shotokan Karate-do, and who usually appreciates Japanese culture more than most.

Japanese should have pride in themselves because they do many things properly- but those Japanese who kill dolphins and whales betray the country's quest for respect as a civilized nation.

I regret I've to sign another petition for this which I had done years ago. I regard Japan as a sensible nation, so I was surprised that no action has been taken so far to eliminate or at least reduce drastically the killing of whales.

Putting a whale to death necessarily involves unthinkable torture, since there is no quick way to kill such an immense animal.
