Protect Humpbacks from Whaling

Target: Ryozo Kato, Ambassador of Japan
Sponsored by: International Fund for Animal Welfare
The Japanese Government is sending its whaling fleet into the protected waters of the Southern Ocean Sanctuary around Antarctica. And this year, Japan is threatening to add endangered humpback and fin whales to its target list!

The Japanese government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling.  In reality, this deadly program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

More than 30,000 whales have been killed since a global ban on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986. Japan must not expand its whaling program!

Tell Japanese Ambassador Ryozo Kato to immediately stop the senseless annual killing of whales, including the endangered Humpback.
deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 75,000

Last week, Japan agreed to temporarily end targeting humpback whales in this year's hunt.

Thanks to concerned citizens like you, the humpbacks are safe until they return to Japanese waters after this year's migraion. This is a step in the right direction, but there is still work to be done.

Please urge Japan to stand firm on its commitment to exclude humpback whales, and to end the hunt of all whale species!

Dear Mr. Ambassador,

Japan kills more than 1,400 whales every year despite a global ban on commercial whaling.

Your government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling. In reality, this deadly "scientific" whaling program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

[Your comment here]

I respectfully urge you to persuade your government to withdraw its announced plans to kill 50 humpback whales and to end its unlawful whaling program.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Unfortunately I feel this petition might not be enough to stop your people from illegally hunting not only the whales but other marine life and wildlife as well. Because of the uneducated people in your country, many of the ecosystems around the world are in danger due to satisfying your countries exotic "taste". I feel you should make more of an effort to educate your people about the affect of the mass killings of animals you willingly allow to happen. This has to STOP NOW as these animals have no way to replenish their population at the rate they are being killed.

This needs to be stopped. These animals were not put on earth for man although man thinks everything is for him. I think the study you are doing should be on humans.

Ambassador, the rest of the world agrees that the killing of whales must stop. Please join the 21st century and stop this barbaric nonsense. It is making your country and your people look bad.

The entire world decided many years ago that the whale hunt needed to end to preserve the dwindling populations of all whales of the world, and yet Japan persists in hunting whales - this is wrong! Regardless of the stated purpose, there is no good reason to hunt for whales. They have done nothing to deserve it, and our study of them can be done much more effectively when they are alive than when they are dead. Whales die each year from accidents and natural causes anyway, so finding carcasses for scientific investigation is quite possible without hunting them. Stop the whale hunt now, and secure your legacy as the person who stood up for what is right!

Dear Ambassador, Japan's whale hunt is unacceptable in a time when our oceans and it's creatures are in danger of extinction due to pollution and over fishing/hunting.All countries need to accept global responsibility for protecting the other species on our planet. Please prohibit the hunt. If you decide to go ahead I will boycott any and all Japanese products and make sure that everyone else I know will do the same. Please don't bring shame on Japan.

This has got to stop! Killing whales under the guise of conducting research, when the real purpose is to sell their meat for a profit, is deceitful and illegal under international law.

We are at the point where we grow all necessary foods to sustain ourselves. We do not need to kill endangered species for food or science. Please stop. Thank you.

This is totally outrageous that a country is killing so many whales and so much other sea life that lies in the path to the whales. The whales cannot regenerate/re-populate as fast as the Japanese are killing them. Stop this un-necessary killing and start caring for the environment and the living creatures in it!
