Protect Humpbacks from Whaling

Target: Ryozo Kato, Ambassador of Japan
Sponsored by: International Fund for Animal Welfare
The Japanese Government is sending its whaling fleet into the protected waters of the Southern Ocean Sanctuary around Antarctica. And this year, Japan is threatening to add endangered humpback and fin whales to its target list!

The Japanese government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling.  In reality, this deadly program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

More than 30,000 whales have been killed since a global ban on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986. Japan must not expand its whaling program!

Tell Japanese Ambassador Ryozo Kato to immediately stop the senseless annual killing of whales, including the endangered Humpback.
deadline: 11-5-2008
goal: 75,000

Last week, Japan agreed to temporarily end targeting humpback whales in this year's hunt.

Thanks to concerned citizens like you, the humpbacks are safe until they return to Japanese waters after this year's migraion. This is a step in the right direction, but there is still work to be done.

Please urge Japan to stand firm on its commitment to exclude humpback whales, and to end the hunt of all whale species!

Dear Mr. Ambassador,

Japan kills more than 1,400 whales every year despite a global ban on commercial whaling.

Your government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling. In reality, this deadly "scientific" whaling program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

[Your comment here]

I respectfully urge you to persuade your government to withdraw its announced plans to kill 50 humpback whales and to end its unlawful whaling program.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

All life is made of water, supported by water, including our own species (humans). We are all connected, therefore if you alter the nature of the ocean (the greatest body of water on earth) then you will alter the nature of our life here on earth as well.

When is Japan going to get their act together, the Humpbacks as far as I know are a species that needs to be protected, there are only so many whales left in the sea now. I support this petition 100%

They have learned nothing and just consume everything. They have no respect for life and then claim to have honour. They are confused and when the whales are gone what will they consume to maintain their way of life....

Please stop this senseless killing. In this day and age I find it discusting to be killing whales, shame on you. I will also boycott products made in Japan. Do you really think the rest of world believes the killing is for scientific research... wake up and have some respect for the other mammals that we share the planet with.

Mr. Ambassador, It is an outrage that these magnificent creatures are being killed illegally by your citizens. You have no right to deplete this planet of such an important resource.

There is simply no justification for the continued slaughtering of whales and Japan's so-called justifications only serve to denigrate the Japanese people.

This is a farce to whale an endangered species in the name of scientific research... the truth is that it is about economic gain.

Japanese whaling activities damage the image of Japan's government in my mind. I try not to let this influence my attitude to individual Japanese people (any more than my attitude to Canadian seal hunting would make me dislike my fellow Canadians). Inevitably, however it makes me just that bit less enthusiastic about buying Japanese goods and visiting Japan as a tourist. I feel the same way about Norway, a well-governed and otherwise admirable country, that is also making the same mistake in continuing to provide economically inefficient, and unnecessary support to whaling, an activity that adds no real value at all - it is unethical and it destroys valuable global natural capital assets.
