Protect Humpbacks from Whaling

Target: Ryozo Kato, Ambassador of Japan
Sponsored by: International Fund for Animal Welfare
The Japanese Government is sending its whaling fleet into the protected waters of the Southern Ocean Sanctuary around Antarctica. And this year, Japan is threatening to add endangered humpback and fin whales to its target list!

The Japanese government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling.  In reality, this deadly program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

More than 30,000 whales have been killed since a global ban on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986. Japan must not expand its whaling program!

Tell Japanese Ambassador Ryozo Kato to immediately stop the senseless annual killing of whales, including the endangered Humpback.
deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 75,000

Last week, Japan agreed to temporarily end targeting humpback whales in this year's hunt.

Thanks to concerned citizens like you, the humpbacks are safe until they return to Japanese waters after this year's migraion. This is a step in the right direction, but there is still work to be done.

Please urge Japan to stand firm on its commitment to exclude humpback whales, and to end the hunt of all whale species!

Dear Mr. Ambassador,

Japan kills more than 1,400 whales every year despite a global ban on commercial whaling.

Your government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling. In reality, this deadly "scientific" whaling program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

[Your comment here]

I respectfully urge you to persuade your government to withdraw its announced plans to kill 50 humpback whales and to end its unlawful whaling program.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

What will you kill after you've killed the last whale? Stop now!

Killing whales under the guise of scientific research is less than disingenious. It's something that Ishii Shiro might dream up.

It has been reported and video taken of Japanese surrounding dolphins in a bay and slaughtering them. Whales that are caught in the trap are also killed. Where is the humanity in this type of slaughter - Japanese people are supposed to be kind and thoughtful of people and nature. Is any amount of money worth the lives of our ocean friends? Shame on the Japanese Government for allowing the killing of whales and dolphins.

The act of killing these beautiful animals is shameless. They should be left to be enjoyed for their beauty.

There is nothing 'scientific' about the whale hunt, and that designation really isn't fooling anyone. To completely ignore the whaling ban is bad enough, but to hunt in protected waters shows a comlete disregard for international law and environmental responsibility.

That Japan uses 'science' to hide behind the truth of this brutal and unnecessary slaughter is a slap in the face to global conservation efforts. Action in good faith is needed by the Japanese government that supports efforts by other countries to ensure that these species are protected and survive for the benfit of future generations.

Do we want the human race to be remembered as a virus that wiped out many of the earth's amazing creatures and threw off the planet's fragile ecosystem? That is what we're doing in recklessly killing endangered species.

What could a comment here possibly achieve when you're obviously cognizant of conservation issues and yet your country continues this hunt. Where has the ecological understanding, empathy for other creatures, consideration, logic, and intellect gone?

How far is greed going to go? Till there are no more whales to be killed and only then the problem is solved...

Stop authorizing or condoning the killing of whales. They are endangered and if that doesn't mean anything to you, then you need some serious education in ecology and biodiversity. Go back to school.

Of all the people in the world, Japan cares nothing for animal life and never has, you will destroy anything and everything for your own personal gain. Animals mean nothing to you, it is very evident. It makes me sick what you people have done to our ocean life.
