Protect Humpbacks from Whaling

Target: Ryozo Kato, Ambassador of Japan
Sponsored by: International Fund for Animal Welfare
The Japanese Government is sending its whaling fleet into the protected waters of the Southern Ocean Sanctuary around Antarctica. And this year, Japan is threatening to add endangered humpback and fin whales to its target list!

The Japanese government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling.  In reality, this deadly program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

More than 30,000 whales have been killed since a global ban on commercial whaling came into effect in 1986. Japan must not expand its whaling program!

Tell Japanese Ambassador Ryozo Kato to immediately stop the senseless annual killing of whales, including the endangered Humpback.
deadline: 11-5-2008
goal: 75,000

Last week, Japan agreed to temporarily end targeting humpback whales in this year's hunt.

Thanks to concerned citizens like you, the humpbacks are safe until they return to Japanese waters after this year's migraion. This is a step in the right direction, but there is still work to be done.

Please urge Japan to stand firm on its commitment to exclude humpback whales, and to end the hunt of all whale species!

Dear Mr. Ambassador,

Japan kills more than 1,400 whales every year despite a global ban on commercial whaling.

Your government attempts to defend its whaling program by calling it "scientific" whaling. In reality, this deadly "scientific" whaling program is nothing more than unlawful commercial whaling in disguise. We don't need to kill whales to study them in the 21st century.

[Your comment here]

I respectfully urge you to persuade your government to withdraw its announced plans to kill 50 humpback whales and to end its unlawful whaling program.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

If whaling continues they will eventually become extinct, our future generations of children will never be able to appreciate their beauty.

Although hunting whales may have been economically valid in the past, the time has come for all of us to change the way we treat the beings with whom we share our home.

I find your lack of recognition on the international moratorium on whaling shows only arrogance and lack of understanding/interest in regards to the whale species and their risk of extinction. Loss of yet another species will happen if you continue to hunt a species that has been determined to be at risk of extinction.

We would be most grateful if you will do your part to keep these whales alive for future generations, and to honour our ancestors who kept them alive for us.

I would strongly urge the Japanese government to consider more sustainable ways of research than killing already endangered species. While your contributions to the world of science are greatly admired and appreciated, kindly consider the impact of these whaling actions on our fragile and ailing planet and ecosystem. Thank you.
