Stop the Secrecy and Killing in Animal Shelters

Sponsored by: Alley Cat Allies

A staggering number of cats are killed in shelters each year. And the majority of these killings happen in secret, away from the public eye and off the record. That's because only a few states require animal shelters to keep records and publicly report the number of cats they kill each year.

You have a right to know what is happening to the animals in your shelters and how your tax dollars and donations are being spent. You can demand that policies change.

A revolutionary change in shelter practice and policy is needed. Pledge to make this happen at your local shelter by contacting them to:
  • Find out their policy on keeping records of how many cats they kill (if they do not have a no-kill policy).

  • Encourage them to make this information publicly available.

  • Support humane methods of care, such as affordable and accessible spay and neuter services and Trap-Neuter-Return programs.

I know they kill over 2 million cats and over 2 million dogs each year. And what do they do with all those bodies? Obviously spay and neutering is one of the biggest answers but this silent holocaust against our best friends is so sad.

This is Litchfield we found her in the parking lot of the hotel we stayed at on our Honeymoon 16 yrs. ago. Animals are so special and deserve better then what they get. There are to many people in this world they live in the streets and in shelters..We don't put them to sleep! WHY THE CATS?

We need to support organizations like Alley Cat Allies who work to spay and neuter feral cats. Reducing cat populations is the only way to really solve this problem.

Spread awareness; learn the laws concerning the responsibilities of animal guardians, and ask my elected representatives why spaying or neutering a pet isn't made a mandatory law; I will contact my local kill shelters and demand that they make a matter of public record the number of cats and dogs euthanized each year and the reasons why concerning each case; And try to explain that by making these numbers available to the public, that they are spreading awarness, and it is in a way a plead for help and change, if they desire to recieve the funding needed to become no kill shelters. Ask them what it would take for them to become no kill shelters; what do they feel they need.

I fostered a cat when he was only 4 weeks old. If I had taken him to a shelter, he would probably be dead. Cats and dogs are not just pets. They have the capacity for love and affection just as humans do. To kill them is a sin; to feel no remorse is evil.
