Stop the Secrecy and Killing in Animal Shelters

Sponsored by: Alley Cat Allies

A staggering number of cats are killed in shelters each year. And the majority of these killings happen in secret, away from the public eye and off the record. That's because only a few states require animal shelters to keep records and publicly report the number of cats they kill each year.

You have a right to know what is happening to the animals in your shelters and how your tax dollars and donations are being spent. You can demand that policies change.

A revolutionary change in shelter practice and policy is needed. Pledge to make this happen at your local shelter by contacting them to:
  • Find out their policy on keeping records of how many cats they kill (if they do not have a no-kill policy).

  • Encourage them to make this information publicly available.

  • Support humane methods of care, such as affordable and accessible spay and neuter services and Trap-Neuter-Return programs.

I happen to own 9 cats that I love and adore more then anything in this world next to God our creator of ALL living and breathing things. Our animals are a gift from God. The bible says in Proverbs !2:10....A righteous man cares much for his animal, but the ways of the wiked are cruel and unkind". How dare our society to be so heartless and cruel to kill animals in our shelters rather then finding better resources for them. Our government needs to give more grants and funds for NO KILL shelters. Unfortunately across the USA and other countries we DO NOT have enough shelters. We desperately need NO KILL shelters and funding to help people to open them so we can give our animals the love and compassion and healthcare they need. Please HELP and Please, please, please put a stop immediately to killing our animals in shelters. Lenette Evans St. Joseph, MI

I understand that some cats have to be put down, but I always thought shelters were required to keep records of how many. The information needs to be made public. I feel that if people knew how many cats really have to die then maybe more people would get their cats and dogs fixed.

I support Alley Cat Allies, which has the only proven (and compassionate) method to control feral cat populations--trap, neuter and release. They also put appropriate cats up for adoption, and give medical care to the cats. When cats are killed, besides the suffering it causes, the remaining population just increases its birthrate, like all wild animals.

The best way to have no kill shelters is to always adopt a pet from your shelter; never from a puppy or kitten mill, backyard breeder or pet store. Always encourage people to have their pets spayed or neutered and to volunteer at your local shelter to help adopt or care for the animals there. Take a walk in their shoes and then you won't criticize the shelter. That is what I have done for nine years.
