Protect Young Women and Girls from Breast Ironing in Cameroon

Target: Mr. Amadou Ali, Minister of Justice, 1000 Yaounde, Cameroon; Mr. Jerome Mendouga, Ambassador, 2349 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008
Sponsored by: Care2
Breast ironing, the traditional practice of massaging or pressing the breasts of adolescent girls in order to suppress the growth of the breasts, is shockingly widespread in Cameroon where one in four teenagers are subjected to the traumatic process by relatives.

Girls as young as eight years old are 'ironed' by their own mothers using a heated stone, with the belief that breast ironing will help these girls and young women avoid sexual harassment and rape. Even the victims themselves think it is good for them.

This form of mutilation has many side-effects, including severe pain and abscesses, infections, breast cancer, and even the complete disappearance of one or both breasts.

Sign now to speak out for the rights of women and girls in Cameroon. Urge the Government of Cameroon to carry out immediate efforts to educate mothers and girls about the dangers of "breast ironing" and to take urgent steps to eradicate it.

To the government of Cameroon:

I was shocked to find out "breast ironing" is still a common practice in Cameroon.

This form of mutilation has many side-effects, including severe pain and abscesses, infections, breast cancer, and even the complete disappearance of one or both breasts.

Like in the case of female genital mutilation, this cruel practice puts the lives of young women and girls at risk, even if the victims themselves think undergoing these procedures is for their own good.

Please do everything in your power to protect the physical integrity and human rights of these young girls. I urge you to carry out immediate efforts to educate mothers and girls about the dangers of "breast ironing" and to take urgent steps to eradicate it.

Thank you in advance for your attention. Please keep me informed regarding any developments in your efforts to end this awful practice.
We signed the “Protect Young Women and Girls from Breast Ironing in Cameroon” petition!

I hear that in your country mutilation of the breasts of teeenage girls is thought to be a necessary precaution against them being molested or raped. Please take action, not only to stop this mutilation but especially to remove the cause, which is a terrible reflection on the image of manhood in your country. Men are not uncontrollable beasts.

This is horrendous. It is archaic, inhumane, and dangerous. We must help protect the well-being of young girls all over the world.

I've never heard of anything so stupid in my life. If someone wants to rape you, I personally don't think it's because of the size of your breasts at all. This needs to stop!

This is completely unacceptable. To erase a part of femininity is not only destructive to the victim, but it also destroys a part of the beauty in the world. Please make every effort to stop this practice.

This is totally absurd!!!! I watched this on National Geographic and was outraged. This is physical abuse, there is another way we can teach our girls to be interested in books than boys. This is not the right way.

The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is a United States federal government program that gives funds to states in order to provide health insurance to families with children. The program was designed to cover uninsured children in families with incomes that are modest but too high to qualify for Medicaid.

Please don't abuse these little girls in this manner. They need to be able to grow and develop.

In the 21st century, we should be able to keep women safe from rape and abuse. We should be able to provide these women with more resources than "breast ironing". It is inhuman to abuse yourself so you hopefully won't be abused by another person.

This is a terrible response to a worse problem: the rape of young girls. The problem will not be solved without making sure that the men carrying out the rape and harrasment realize that this behavior is unacceptable.

I disagree with ironing of women and little girls. Its mother nature. If you are made to have to big breast so then let it be other than that keep living your life.
