Stop the Latest Assault on Our Wolves

Target: Western Gray Wolf Recovery Coordinator
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
The Bush/Cheney Administration has announced two proposals to jumpstart the killing of hundreds of wolves in the Yellowstone area and elsewhere in the Northern Rockies.

Officials in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are now seeking public comment on the agency's proposal to accept Wyoming's disastrous wolf management plan and to give Idaho and Wyoming vast new powers to kill wolves -- even while these magnificent animals remain listed under the Endangered Species Act.

The deadline for comments on these two flawed proposals is Monday, August 6th. Please sign our petition to send your message to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service right now!

The deadline for comments on these anti-wolf plans was August 6th - thank you for your actions! This petition is now closed.

You can still help wolves. Representative George Miller (D-CA) will be introducing legislation in September to close a loophole in the Federal Airborne Hunting Act to prohibit aerial gunning of wolves. Urge your representative to protect wolves by co-sponsoring this bill!
SL: RE: RIN 1018-AU53 and RIN 1018-AV39

Dear Western Gray Wolf Recovery Coordinator,

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife, I strongly oppose the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's recent proposals regarding the management of gray wolves in the Northern Rockies (RIN 1018-AV39 and RIN 1018-AU53).

Specifically, I object to the Service's plan to redefine what are seen as "unacceptable impacts" on elk and other species (RIN 1018-AV39). The new, vaguer definition would cause wolves to be killed not just for causing game populations to fall below state targets, but also if wolves affect deer or elk movements or behavior in almost any way.

Such an approach is not based on sound science. According to the state wildlife agency estimates, game populations are thriving in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

I believe the revised definition would pose an unacceptable threat to the long term survival of gray wolves in the Northern Rockies. Under the proposed definition, endangered wolves could be killed just for fulfilling their natural role in the Northern Rockies' interconnected ecosystem -- down to only 200 wolves per state.

I also strongly oppose the proposal to accept Wyoming's management plan for gray wolves and remove gray wolves in that state from the list of Threatened and Endangered Species (RIN 1018-AU53). The plan now supported by your agency is strikingly similar to the proposal the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has rightly opposed until recently.

Wyoming's plan would classify wolves as "predatory animals" in the majority of the state, allowing wolves to be shot on sight by anyone at anytime. Trapping, baiting, and possibly even poisoning would also become legal.

Wyoming officials have already announced plans to kill all but 100 wolves as soon as possible, and to manage wolves at the lowest population levels that are legally permissible going forward.

Both of these proposals threaten the future of wolves in the Northern Rockies, and both should be rejected.

Thank you for considering my comments.

Sincerely,

I am deepy opposed to the proposal that would allow the aerial gunning down of wolves in the yellowstone area and in Idaho,Montana and Wyoming. The gray wolf is an endangered species.

Why is it so necessary to be killing all this wildlife? First you run the indians off their reservations and you want to kill wolves, deer and God knows what else for some bureucratic reason. We need to conserve our wildlife. So please stop this unnecessary killing.

This is unethical. Nature needs ALL of God's creatures for balance. And unilaterally killing these beautiful animals is murder, plain and simple. Shame on you for sanctioning this.

These woves are listed as endangered animals how can any consideration be given to killing them. What is the point of listing species as endangered if anyone can take it into their heads that this law does not apply to them. Wolves serve a valuble service, they kill the lame and sick wildlife. I am just shocked at the blatant disregard for laws that American citizens voted on.

As these animals are on the endangered species list, doesn't this make the Bush/Cheney administration "poachers"? Isn't that against the law? Please stop this nonsense while we still have any wolves at all. You will have to account to the maker of all things at some point. I hope you're ready.

I think this is horrible. It is just like when they used to move elderly animals from cirucs' etc. and brought them to camps where people pay to hunt and kill them. The treatment of wildlife is looked at as secondary and it shouldn't be - God created everything not just humans. I prefer if to make rooms in jails they let child molesters and murders go free in an enclosed area where they can be hunter via helcopters and killed off instead. But these "animals" h ave laws in their favor. Let our wildlife continue to live - I will continue to be their voice.

Wolves have a very slight economic impact on ranchers and others in their territory, and they are still endangered. Therefore, it makes no sense to remove their environmental protections and to allow people to shoot them. Furthermore, humans do not have a "right" to unfettered use of the land. The wolves have just as much right to it as the ranchers, and probably more. People who like to go around shooting animals should take a good long look at how valuable THEY are.
