Protect Birth Control: No to President Bush's Latest Proposal

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
The Bush administration is proposing a new regulation that would discourage doctors and health-care clinics from providing birth control to women who need it. This regulation would require federal health programs to certify that they will hire nurses and other providers who openly object to abortion or contraception in order to receive federal aid to run their programs.

The regulation could seriously jeopardize state laws and policies that protect women's access to birth control. For example, state laws that require hospitals to provide sexual-assault victims with access to emergency contraception could be jeopardized!

Members of Congress are calling on the Bush administration to change course. Please let your members of Congress know that you strongly oppose this attack on women's health and individual rights.

For more information on the proposal, see http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/washington/15rule.html?_r=1&sq=birth

Dear [Congressperson]:

I'm writing to express my opposition to proposed new rules that would discourage doctors and health-care clinics from providing contraception to women who need it.

Current federal law already allows doctors and even health-care corporations (hospitals, HMOs, and health plans) to refuse to provide services or make referrals for abortion. The new rule, which deliberately confuses the definitions of contraception and abortion, would cause disarray in law, regulations and policy and make it more difficult for women to obtain birth control.

I know it's an uphill battle, but I support any efforts to try to convince the Bush administration to change course on the regulation.

Until we get a President in office who knows what it is to have a period and give birth, we should not be hearing from him what to do with our bodies. Tell him no. We say no. We mean no. He can't have his way with us. He can't impose his views on us. We are free Americans not Bushians.

It is a violation of the civil rights of every American woman to not have the right to birth control or the right to have an abortion if she so choses. Most of those who truly need this would be those that we have to support them and their families later on in their lives. I cannot imagine birth control being denied to any woman in America. This is absolutely ridiculous!

A woman has a right to chose when or if she gets pregnant, not the federal government. It would be better for the country to allow women to make this decision, based on their own given circumstances, rather than have children they cannot afford or want. Or for those women who want a career over a family. We haven't solved the problem of teen pregnancies and to pass Bush's policy would only escalate problems in these areas.

contraception is key to explosive population growth. Please convince the administration to do the right thing!

I am a firm believer in prevention!! Since the cost of living has risen a lot of families will not be able to afford to have a child. Education and awareness is key. Most couples will not be able to comfortably afford to have children until they are 33. Couples that decide to have children at an early age will more than likely be stuck in poverty. This new legislation is aimed at low-income-communities. Please veto this legislation which is only another power-tactic by the Bush administration!!!

Once again, it is each woman's right to decide what happens to her own body. Please allow her to choose a medical environment if she chooses to terminate.

I find it unconscionable that this decision, which is a private one based on a woman's own religious beliefs, should in any way be refused contraceptive services. If you want me to take God out of my schools to not offend atheists, then let's take God out of the doctor's office and the pharmacy as well. Any practitioner who refuses, based on conscience, to provide these services (hospital, HMO, clinic or doctor) should advertise this up front so that people can choose practitioners based on their belief system and let others alone. Government should not be stepping in to regulate this when it is legal.

Please vote against this! It is my right to keep myself safe! Our economy is already struggling, to say yes to this would cause more people to be poor and more illegal activity and unsafe practices to have abortions! Either way, its a woman's choice!
