Protect Birth Control: No to President Bush's Latest Proposal

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
The Bush administration is proposing a new regulation that would discourage doctors and health-care clinics from providing birth control to women who need it. This regulation would require federal health programs to certify that they will hire nurses and other providers who openly object to abortion or contraception in order to receive federal aid to run their programs.

The regulation could seriously jeopardize state laws and policies that protect women's access to birth control. For example, state laws that require hospitals to provide sexual-assault victims with access to emergency contraception could be jeopardized!

Members of Congress are calling on the Bush administration to change course. Please let your members of Congress know that you strongly oppose this attack on women's health and individual rights.

For more information on the proposal, see http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/washington/15rule.html?_r=1&sq=birth

Dear [Congressperson]:

I'm writing to express my opposition to proposed new rules that would discourage doctors and health-care clinics from providing contraception to women who need it.

Current federal law already allows doctors and even health-care corporations (hospitals, HMOs, and health plans) to refuse to provide services or make referrals for abortion. The new rule, which deliberately confuses the definitions of contraception and abortion, would cause disarray in law, regulations and policy and make it more difficult for women to obtain birth control.

I know it's an uphill battle, but I support any efforts to try to convince the Bush administration to change course on the regulation.

Please give this your consideration. I myself do not take birth control due to a minor heart condition, but I have a sister and many friends who do. I have heard them speak in extreme frustration and strain with about the skyrocketing costs of birth control.

This assault on women's rights, family planning and environmental concerns (how much can the earth support?!) is outrageous!! It is being perpetrated for political reasons without any concern for the consequences!

I am absolutely appalled. As a young female i believe that i have the right to have contraception. George Bush should be a woman for a day, then he would know the suffering we endure on a daily basis.

Women should have their rights, whether it is legal or not, women will find ways which could just be another US replay of what we should of learned in history.

As today is the official celebration of establishment of Womens' Rights(eg voting), I feel a strong need to sign this petition due to OVERWHELMING sense of anxiety and nervousness that American culture(in all aspects) is in a state of reversion instead of progression--a very "slippery slope" in the loss of social stability! Personal freedom(aka liberty) to make(sane)choices and decisions for one's happiness/health/(w)holeness is the base/cornerstone of our society, one that majority of people around the world DON'T HAVE! Our country is severely "poor" in relation to FEELING sanctity of and satisfied with LIFE, although we're "rich" in subsidies and sustenance of LIVing. Chaos is created by the callousness of our cultural towards fundamental civil/human rights of ALL people(no matter age, gender, race or status): thus we HAVE to continuing going "uphill" in order to achieve a state of social stability and satisfaction[ie a soulful & spirited(vs religious) life by most people]. This proposal would be a MAJOR reversal of a fortunate cultural achievement, plus dishonor &/or disrespect the people who endured enormous distress in obtaining WOMENS' RIGHTS(to make her own choices and decisions)!

If you want to see your daughters die from back-alley abortions then go ahead with this ridiculous plan. Would you deny a young woman who was raped birth control or force her to lead a path she didn't choose. Women's rights should NOT be government regulated!

Due to a medical condition, I was told that it would be very dangerous to have another child after my first. To promote family and marital harmony, it was necessary to use a form of birth control. To take that option away from the public is unreasonable.

Government must stop its restrictions on giving a woman the right to choose BEFORE its too late... contraception and morning after pills are NOT abortion! Stop trying to play God! Even God gave humans the right to choose!

I'm writing to express my opposition to a proposed new Health and Human Services regulation intended to protect the jobs of doctors and other health care workers who refuse to participate in abortions because of religious or moral objections. In addition, this regulation could discourage doctors and health-care clinics from providing contraception to women who need it. Federal law already allows doctors and even health-care corporations (hospitals, HMOs, and health plans) to refuse to provide services or make referrals for abortion. The new rule, which deliberately confuses the definitions of contraception and abortion, would cause disarray in law, regulations, and policy, and make it more difficult for women to obtain birth control. If doctors and medical workers have a moral objection to doing their jobs, they should find different jobs (even within medicine there are many areas that would not force them to act against their consciences on this issue), not deny women the means to control our own bodies and manage our own health care. They have a right to their convictions, but they do not have a right to keep jobs they are unwilling to perform adequately. Leavitt states that, "Nothing in the new regulation in any way changes a patient's right to any legal procedure"; however, while it may not restrict our rights, it does restrict our access, which has the same result. There is no recourse provided in the regulation for women who are forced to travel outside their area to seek care or have trouble finding a doctor who will provide assistance. This regulation is unconscionable, it is harmful to women and those who care about them, and it sets a very dangerous precedent.

The vast majority of Americans have had it with the untra-religious. Their insanity knows no bounds. The fact the Bush and GOP members of congress genuflect to these people is sickening.
