Protect Birth Control: No to President Bush's Latest Proposal

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
The Bush administration is proposing a new regulation that would discourage doctors and health-care clinics from providing birth control to women who need it. This regulation would require federal health programs to certify that they will hire nurses and other providers who openly object to abortion or contraception in order to receive federal aid to run their programs.

The regulation could seriously jeopardize state laws and policies that protect women's access to birth control. For example, state laws that require hospitals to provide sexual-assault victims with access to emergency contraception could be jeopardized!

Members of Congress are calling on the Bush administration to change course. Please let your members of Congress know that you strongly oppose this attack on women's health and individual rights.

For more information on the proposal, see http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/washington/15rule.html?_r=1&sq=birth

Dear [Congressperson]:

I'm writing to express my opposition to proposed new rules that would discourage doctors and health-care clinics from providing contraception to women who need it.

Current federal law already allows doctors and even health-care corporations (hospitals, HMOs, and health plans) to refuse to provide services or make referrals for abortion. The new rule, which deliberately confuses the definitions of contraception and abortion, would cause disarray in law, regulations and policy and make it more difficult for women to obtain birth control.

I know it's an uphill battle, but I support any efforts to try to convince the Bush administration to change course on the regulation.

It is none of the governments business if a woman wants to use birth control. Stop trying to return us to the days of barefoot and pregnant.

I have been using birth control since i was 14 years old...not for contraception but for ovarian cysts that can cause me terrible crippling pain. I had a surgery to remove the cyst when i was 18 but it didnt work since the cyst grew back. the only thing that has been able to keep these growths at bay has been birth control pills. I only started using my pills for contraception with my husband at age 20, i am now 21 and i fear losing my only way of controlling my illness as well as my way of keeping myself from getting pregnant. I know my husband feels the same way, hes seen me in that crippling pain and i saw it in his eyes that he suffered watching me like that. I whole heartedly hate abortion becuase it kills an already developing child but contraception is NOT abortion since it prevents the sperm and egg from uniting in the first place.

How many more times does this thing come up?Women do not deserve their rights being taken away!England has a lot more to offer women who have been assaulted and became pregnant. The US is a democracy, not a hypocricy!Mr.Bush is one of the biggest hyocrites we have running this place we call the USA!Mrs.Bush(laura),I do like her ,because she knows women's rights cannot be taken away! There are so many children being neglected and abandoned-encouragement of these behaviors makes me boil over the top!

This country is already full of people who cannot afford to take care of their children--don't encourage child abandonment and neglect by restricting women's rights over their own reproductive health. The government has no place to dictate personal choices on this level. Women are not babyfactories and this proposal is extremely oppressive, discriminatory and sexist. Has anyone considered the long-term socioeconomic consequences of this proposal?

Birth control not only is to prevent women of getting pregnant, but also it helps to alleviate the pain from the menstruation. I know a few women that take contraceptives because of the pain, and I am one of them. Moreover, we had try other methods and pill to alleviate the pain, but so far the contraceptives are the only ones that works.

Woment need straight information about birth control. The government should not interfere with providing contraception to women in any sector of our country.

It amazes me that out of everything our government could take away, they take away birth control, the one things besides condoms keeping young people from getting pregnant. It doesn't seem fair that women will not be allowed to choose wether they want to use this product or not. A womans body carries the baby, a mans does not, so I don't think they understand how most girls and women will feel when this subject is touched in this way. This will not stop teens or women from having sex, it just increases the likely hood of them becoming pregnant. I disagree one hundred percent, with taking birth control away.

Does the Federal government plan to provide the cost of all the births, the subsequent care and feeding, and the education (including college) for the thousands of unplanned babies that will result from this new rule? Where has 'reason' gone?

Dear Congressperson, It is imperative that we protect a woman's right to choose. The contribution that women have made to this country is astounding, and it is time that we stand behind their rights as much as we have stood behind the rights of men for centuries. A woman's right to choose is a medical right that has now been protected for decades and depriving a woman of necessary contraceptives goes against this legislation and would ultimately lead to more abortions.

At a time when more and more Americans are either uninsured or struggling with the soaring costs of health care, the federal government should be expanding access to important health services, not undermining existing protections or interfering in programs that have successfully provided services for years.

Im against Abortion, Birth control is Not Abortion, Women should have Free access to regular Birth Control, I believe that might cut down Abortions, it's crazy to Withhold Birth Control From Women who want to take an active Role in not baring Unwanted Babies into this world or choosing Abortion..
