Protect Birth Control: No to President Bush's Latest Proposal

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
The Bush administration is proposing a new regulation that would discourage doctors and health-care clinics from providing birth control to women who need it. This regulation would require federal health programs to certify that they will hire nurses and other providers who openly object to abortion or contraception in order to receive federal aid to run their programs.

The regulation could seriously jeopardize state laws and policies that protect women's access to birth control. For example, state laws that require hospitals to provide sexual-assault victims with access to emergency contraception could be jeopardized!

Members of Congress are calling on the Bush administration to change course. Please let your members of Congress know that you strongly oppose this attack on women's health and individual rights.

For more information on the proposal, see http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/washington/15rule.html?_r=1&sq=birth

Dear [Congressperson]:

I'm writing to express my opposition to proposed new rules that would discourage doctors and health-care clinics from providing contraception to women who need it.

Current federal law already allows doctors and even health-care corporations (hospitals, HMOs, and health plans) to refuse to provide services or make referrals for abortion. The new rule, which deliberately confuses the definitions of contraception and abortion, would cause disarray in law, regulations and policy and make it more difficult for women to obtain birth control.

I know it's an uphill battle, but I support any efforts to try to convince the Bush administration to change course on the regulation.

Don't forget the fact that abortions were once banned-in the 1960's There were so many women dying from illegal abortions in garages, basements, etc. that we women finally got the ban on abortions repealed. Don't repeat this very criminal mistake! At the time of conception there are thousands of eggs and millions of sperm. But only one (normally) gets to become a baby. Then all of those other fertilized eggs do not become babies. These normal "abortions" are not children dying. Therefor prevention of fertilized eggs in the uterus is not killing people - and neither is an abortion due to other problems. Those other fertilized eggs that do not get born are not murders! If you ban abortions, you will be killing so many women who aren't even married, were raped, or were using birth control that didn't work, like rubbers that didn't work, women who were raped and don't want that child!!!! or a number of other circumstances that were not the woman's fault. I saw an article about a woman 84 years old that gave birth to a child. Who would have thought she would have a child if she had intercourse. Stop the madness, women are people too! I thanked God every day when abortions were legal. From a woman who has 4 children and has had abortions when necessary.

There are already many unwanted, neglected and abused children in this world. Let us do what we are able to keep from adding to those numbers.

I know changes have been made to the proposed rules, but they are merely cosmetic, and would still make it more difficult for women to obtain birth control.

The law supports access to safe and legal abortion, to effective birth control and emergency contraception, to reproductive health services and education for all women. Attempts to restrict these rights through legislation, regulation or Constitutional amendment should be prevented. The 14th Amendment guarantees our right to privacy. The right to privacy of our health information (which might include birth control information) was further decided in the case of Griswold v. Connecticut. In this case it is stated that a "right to privacy" can be found within the U.S. Constitution which includes the use of contraception by married couples. This decision paved the way for Eisenstadt v. Baird in 1972, which extended the right to single people. Since the Griswold decision, many of our most cherished rights have emanated from the right to privacy, including the right to abortion. More recently, in Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court relied upon it to extend privacy rights to gay and lesbians within their homes. As part of a job interview one cannot be asked their position on abortion or birth control. The Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 (CSRA) states that it is a violation to solicit or consider employment recommendations based on factors other than personal knowledge or records of job-related abilities or characteristics and the Office of Special Council prosecutes violators. 5 U.S.C. 2302. For Federal jobs this falls as a viable complaint, as it would affect hiring practices, under the Equal Employment Opportunities Act and charges can be filed through the EEOC. In addition, you need to fight the appointment of Janice Rogers Brown to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court. This is another attempt of Bush to stack the bench with opponents of Roe vs, Wade. A preservation of rights are paramount whether it is the rights of women to health issues over their own body, or invasion of privacy , or job discrimination of any kind. These rights deserve your full support and any and all attempts to take away these rights need to be blocked.
