Fix Mortgages for Families and Stabilize the Economy!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Consumers Union

The mortgage market crisis is affecting all homeowners in the U.S. -- and the future of their families -- even if their own mortgage situation is stable. As more homes go into foreclosure, nearby property values plummet, community tax bases decline and local services suffer.

Congress is considering legislation on the mortgage crisis in the coming weeks. The bill should:

  • Encourage lenders to restructure loans so people can avoid foreclosure.
  • End lending practices that prevent people from refinancing or steer families into high cost loans when they qualify for better ones.
  • Require lenders to base their lending on a borrower's ability to repay the loan.
  • Make sure whatever federal rules are adopted allow states and local communities to develop additional solutions.

If we can keep families in their homes, the housing market benefits and everyone wins. Sign the petition and tell your lawmakers they need to help the families who are in trouble to stabilize the economy for everyone.

Dear Congress:

The mortgage market crisis affects my home's value and the future of my family, even if my own mortgage situation is stable. The potential effects on the economy as a whole should make it a top priority for you.

It is time for Congress to take action to stem the tide of mortgage foreclosures and rein in the abusive, subprime lending practices that are producing disastrous effects upon the entire economy.

Congress should take up and pass a package that takes meaningful steps to provide relief to distressed homeowners. The mortgage crisis cannot be solved by tax breaks and corporate bailouts. Until real families get real relief, more homes will go into foreclosure, hurting all of us in the process.
We signed the “Fix Mortgages for Families and Stabilize the Economy!” petition!

If we do not help homeowers with their deceptive mortgages. The economy will worsen. If Congress really cares about their constituents than solve this problem.

We are a family of "lucky ones" whom the mortgage crisis hasn't hit yet. We, too are middle class but are fortunate that we haven't joined the ranks of those poor souls who can't afford to feed our families or buy gas for our vehicles. When the President of the U.S. stands before us, on TV and says in essence, "the country is having some rough times right now", where in the hell has he been for the last 5 or 6 years? He hasn't a clue what it costs for gas, insurance, food, fuel to heat our homes, medicines for the poor or our children. Everything has skyrocketed our of control and he has the nerve to say we have hit a few bumps in the road. It is time that the middle class in this country take over and make some noise. We obviously haven't done enough because it isn't getting through to the politicians. They say what they think we want to hear but they never really listen to us.

Morgages are at an all time high because of our Government and it's time we said NO MORE. I live in a very small town of 1,000 or less but we have so many empty home because people can't afford to keep them because the price is way to high. My town is a farming town, yet even some of our farmers are going belly up beccause they can't afford to morgage there homes at a decent rate. We retirereys are doning the best we can but believe me we aren't going to make over the next 5 - 10 year because everything keeps going up except the cost to live. Notice I said the cost to live not the cost of living. Please do something to help all of us not just the Rich because they just keep getting richer by the minute and we pay for that with our blood, sweat and tears. Thank You

Compassion is needed now for the hundreds of thousands of people who will suffer badly if forced to leave their homes. The banks can afford to transfer those predatory loans to AFFORDABLE fixed rate, 30 year mortgages. In the end, this will benefit not only the homeowners facing eviction, but the whole country. This crisis should teach us that some banks are unscrupulous and so laws must be made to prevent deceptive lending practices in the future.

Today Adolf Bush actually allowed that Our Nation "MIGHT" be in an economic slowdown !! That was REALLY BIG of him considering that Our Entire Nation save for The Thieves of Wall Street and The Robber Barons have been in RECESSION ever since EARLY '01 !! Next Stop on Adolf's Magical Mystery Tour would have to be His New Global Great Depression !! Recently he acknowledged that some homeowners might be suffering !! To date he has BAILED OUT many of those Thieves of Wall Street and those Con Artists that wrote The Mortgages Timed To Self Destruct !! Now he wants to BAIL OUT those who over built ON SPEC , those who led people into MAX MANSIONS also on spec , and Automakers !! That last one might seem a tad strange until one recalls Those Great Depression Era Hoovervilles !! How Kind of Adolf Bush to remember that His Victims will need fully functioning cars in which to flee from one Hooverville to the next as local authourities use Brutal Gestapo and Storm Trooper Tactics , and probably a hell of a lot of Abuse and Torture , to force them to repeatedly flee various jurisdictions in a great exodus of refugees far larger than that former Great Diaspora of Refugees who fled The Bushie Twins - Katrina and Rita , most of whom still remain in SHOCK AND AWE !! Yet precious little has been done to protect currently threatened home owners and nothing has been done to make whole those already dispossessed !! But thanks to Adolf Bush they might have working vehicles in which to FLEE His Tender Mercies !!!!! ALL HAIL THE GREAT BUSH !!!!!

People, not corporations. We as a nation must begin to value a healthy, secure and happy life for the individual vs. corporate power and greed. A roof over your head should be a basic human right, not something reserved for the rich.

REGULATION of banking, insurance, energy and pharmaceuticals is crucial. No more lobbyist so regulation is once again done. Public campaign financing cleans up D.C. and they work for us.

I was outraged to see in today's paper that lending institutions may succeed in blocking help to homeowners facing foreclosure. Their unethical and corrupt lending practices should be stopped, and homeowners should be given a chance to restructure loans and remain in their homes for the stability of the entire economy.
