Urge the FDA to improve access to the morning-after pill

Target: U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Acting Commissioner, Andrew von Eschenbach
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
The Bush administration has broken its promise to make a decision on the morning-after pill by September 1.

American women have waited more than two years for the FDA to decide whether women can purchase the morning-after pill over the counter. The delays persist despite The Bush administration's explicit promise to the U.S. Senate that the FDA would stop dragging its feet and issue a decision by September 1.

Now that Lester Crawford has abruptly resigned his post as Commissioner after just three months on the job, we have a real opportunity for progress under new FDA leadership.

Join us in telling the FDA that Americans are fed up with anti-choice politics getting in the way of sound science and women's access to birth control. Sign our petition to the FDA today!

Dear Acting Commissioner,

I urge you to approve an application to make Plan B available to women over the counter, Docket 2005N-0345.

Plan B, a safe and effective emergency contraceptive (EC), could reduce the number of unintended pregnancies each year by half. Improving access to EC is particularly important for survivors of sexual assault, the majority of whom do not receive information about EC in the emergency room.

Your own advisory committees overwhelmingly recommended making the morning-after pill available without a prescription. It's time to put pressure from anti-choice and anti-birth control lawmakers aside and listen to the scientists.

Bush has broken his promise, wow, there's a new one. Did anyone really believe that he would keep his word? He is not only anti-choice, he is anti-freedom, anti-democracy, anti-women, anti-peace, if there is anything good and humane left in your country, count on the fact that he is against it. He is anti-christian but he is too stupid to know it.

Most conservative, evangelecal, fundamentalist Christians vote for GOP candidates. This is why Bush and the GOP Congress suck-up to these people and grant their every wish. FDA, please don't respond to these people's every wish. Allow the pill!

EC does not induce an abortion and does not work if a woman is already pregnant. This pill needs to be put over-the-counter so that it will be available for women who have been sexually assaulted and need emergency assistance in preventing an unwanted pregnancy. It is also vital in cases of contraceptive failure.

Science says EC is safe over the counter. Stop caving to the special interests of a very vocal minority. Start putting the welfare of American women as your priority instead.

Improved access to the morning-after pill could reduce the number of unintended pregnancies by half. In fact, one study showed that the morning-after pill could have prevented 22,000 of the approximate 25,000 pregnancies resulting from sexual assault in 1998. Our society needs to start respecting and trusting women, instead of punishing women for our reproductive biology. Please do the right thing and approve this application to sell emergency contraception over the counter.
