Urge the FDA to improve access to the morning-after pill

Target: U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Acting Commissioner, Andrew von Eschenbach
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
The Bush administration has broken its promise to make a decision on the morning-after pill by September 1.

American women have waited more than two years for the FDA to decide whether women can purchase the morning-after pill over the counter. The delays persist despite The Bush administration's explicit promise to the U.S. Senate that the FDA would stop dragging its feet and issue a decision by September 1.

Now that Lester Crawford has abruptly resigned his post as Commissioner after just three months on the job, we have a real opportunity for progress under new FDA leadership.

Join us in telling the FDA that Americans are fed up with anti-choice politics getting in the way of sound science and women's access to birth control. Sign our petition to the FDA today!

Dear Acting Commissioner,

I urge you to approve an application to make Plan B available to women over the counter, Docket 2005N-0345.

Plan B, a safe and effective emergency contraceptive (EC), could reduce the number of unintended pregnancies each year by half. Improving access to EC is particularly important for survivors of sexual assault, the majority of whom do not receive information about EC in the emergency room.

Your own advisory committees overwhelmingly recommended making the morning-after pill available without a prescription. It's time to put pressure from anti-choice and anti-birth control lawmakers aside and listen to the scientists.

Women have the right to access safe contraceptives, without going through a lengthy process. By the time many women could even get an appointment with their doctor, their eggs may have already been fertilized. We need to prevent unwanted pregnancies so that we can prevent abortions and child abandonment. The right to choose is not a privilage, it belongs to everyone. If you could choose between having an unwanted child, or using a contraceptive that'd prevent it, well, the answer is clear. There are too many unwanted children suffering in horrid conditions, being punnished for their parents' mistakes, or presure from society to have them. Women are perfectly able to decide for themselves something that will so profoundly affect their future.

NARAL's extreme agenda will kill many young women. It has already killed millions of pre-born babies.

You are pandering to the Christian Right at the expense of women's lives. Show some spine and expedite this sensible access to birth control.

Any woman in Nicaragua is allowed to buy over the counter morning after pills without prescriptions...It's unbelievable that my poor country is far more modern and conscious than yours...

It's not abortion - It's prevention - It uses the same chemicals as the pill we already use - it's about time it was legal

Birth control is the most effective way to prevent unwanted pregnancies so why are you dragging your feet?

Research shows it is safe and effective. Stop delaying approval of this medication to please a religious group. Or are you going to stop selling all medications because it is against the beliefs of some religious groups as well?
