Urge the FDA to improve access to the morning-after pill

Target: U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Acting Commissioner, Andrew von Eschenbach
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
The Bush administration has broken its promise to make a decision on the morning-after pill by September 1.

American women have waited more than two years for the FDA to decide whether women can purchase the morning-after pill over the counter. The delays persist despite The Bush administration's explicit promise to the U.S. Senate that the FDA would stop dragging its feet and issue a decision by September 1.

Now that Lester Crawford has abruptly resigned his post as Commissioner after just three months on the job, we have a real opportunity for progress under new FDA leadership.

Join us in telling the FDA that Americans are fed up with anti-choice politics getting in the way of sound science and women's access to birth control. Sign our petition to the FDA today!

Dear Acting Commissioner,

I urge you to approve an application to make Plan B available to women over the counter, Docket 2005N-0345.

Plan B, a safe and effective emergency contraceptive (EC), could reduce the number of unintended pregnancies each year by half. Improving access to EC is particularly important for survivors of sexual assault, the majority of whom do not receive information about EC in the emergency room.

Your own advisory committees overwhelmingly recommended making the morning-after pill available without a prescription. It's time to put pressure from anti-choice and anti-birth control lawmakers aside and listen to the scientists.

A woman has the right to control her own body. If she chooses not to get pregnant no one should stand in her way !

Based on all the evidence, and that includes evidence and rationale provided by the product's maker, it appears to me that the FDA is making a political issue to the detriment of America's women.

The FDA should make its decision based on the best scientific data available. Neither politics nor religion should be a deciding factor.

We the public are increasingly aware that the Bush Admin. is blind to science and blinded by patriarchal religion, which has the audacity to presume to control women's bodies and reproductive rights, and all without financial/educational/moral support to poor women/mothers/single women, all who suffer from this misogyny (look up this word, Mr. President) You will not get away with this.

If Viagra is deemed acceptable, I cannot for the life of me see why something as necessary as emergency birth control is being denied.

Family planning should be left to the person who would be having the family. This is not a beginning of life issue. Please help women make responsible choices is when to have a family.
