Support America's first offshore wind farm

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Care2
Several U.S. Senators, led by Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK), are trying to block plans for "Cape Wind," the nation's first offshore wind farm in Cape Cod, MA. The wind farm would create jobs and meet 75% of the electricity needs of Cape Cod and surrounding islands, helping to reduce fossil fuel consumption and cut global warming pollution from power plants.

But despite the huge potential benefits, Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) backs a bill that would effectively halt the proposed construction. The 130-turbine, 24-square-mile cluster of windmills would be about 8 miles from Kennedy's home in Hyannis Port.

Ted Kennedy and other rich homeowners just don't want their view spoiled.

The Cape Wind project has been undergoing stringent environmental reviews for five years now; experts estimate there would be very little if any negative impact under water for marine life.

As record oil prices turn attention to the need for renewable fuels, momentum is building in Congress to buck Senator Edward M. Kennedy's bid to block the proposed Cape Cod wind energy project. Speak up! Sign this petition and let your representatives know that you want renewable energy!

Dear Senator,

I strongly urge you to vote to remove Sen. Stevens' offshore wind farm amendment from the Coast Guard Authorization Act (H.R. 889).

[your comment here]

The wind farm would save millions of dollars in energy costs and help the United States wean itself off foreign oil at a time of record-high prices, in a region where fuel bills have doubled in 5 years.

During its construction and operation, Cape Wind would create jobs and increase tax revenues in the region. And once operational, it would be able to meet about 75 percent of the electricity needs of Cape Cod and surrounding islands, helping to reduce fossil fuel consumption and cut global warming pollution from power plants.

For the past five years, Cape Wind has been subject to an ongoing rigorous environmental review process that is examining all aspects of the project, including wildlife and navigational issues, to ensure that any appropriate protective measures are adopted.

Experts estimate there would be very little if any negative impact on marine life.

Development of America’s offshore wind industry would benefit both our environment and our economy. Please protect Cape Wind and remove Sen. Stevens' amendment before passing the Coast Guard Reauthorization Act.

Sincerely,

[your name]

Wow - a natural, renewable energy source that creates jobs and saves the environment ---- only 'special interest' groups would try to block it.

I grew up on the Cape and remember when real estate was available to regular people who wanted summer homes and places to retire. Now, the Cape has become a haven for the wealthy who don't care about the environment or the Earth's future, only that "their" view should not be spoiled. What about our children and grandchildren? Don't they deserve an unspoiled view of the ocean?

I have a great deal of respect for you, Senator Kennedy, and all you have done and continue to do in service to your country and its citizens who otherwise don't have a voice against the widespread corruption and greed in our government. I would like to know why you do not support an offshore wind farm that it seems could contribute toward healing our environment. Please look at the pros and cons that affect our planet in this case. It seems like a good idea!

We are just growing in numbers every single day, and to think wind farms weren't included 20 years ago is major disappointment.

We need to do all possible to promote the use of renewable energy. Enough is enough of the rich having their way at the expense of the environment!

Global warming and the use of fossil fuels is worsening. In Pennsylvania, caps have expired on electricity, raising prices by 150%. It's time we found a new source of energy before it's too late.

I think our immediate need for non-fossil fuel energy sources outweighs the needs of a relative few to maintain their view of the ocean.

Amazing, I am absolutely stunned that he would oppose something so good for his own interests & the interests of his wealthy friends over the benefits for the people and the environment, again shows that government cares only for themselves & the wealthy & not for the people of the country & they want us to stay dependent on oil so they can get the kickbacks. I hope people remember this at voting time for this "man" who probably only got his position due to his name. Absolutely ridiculous!

If the wealthy homeowners think their view will be spoiled by a wind farm, by the way, placed in the ocean's waters that do not belong to them, their children and grandchildren may have a terribly polluted altered view over their precious Cape Cod horizon 30-50 years from now as a result of increased CO2, i.e., global warming, in the atmosphere. We have a chance NOW to change our view.

Senator Kennedy, as a voting constituent of Massachusetts I am APPALLED that you would oppose the building of America's first offshore wild farm! The US gov has spent BILLION$ for the war in Iraq and HUNDREDS of American soldiers have DIED.. ALL because we are WAY too dependent on foreign oil as our #1 energy source! Not to mention that global warming is increasing at an alarming rate because of the world's use of coal and oil! We need to start using a CLEAN RENEWABLE energy source, such as wind power, and we need to start NOW! If you continue your campaign against this project, you will NOT be receiving my vote in any future elections.
