Say NO to mass dog slaughter in China

Target: Clark T. Randt, U.S. Ambassador to China
Sponsored by: Care2
Officials in a southwestern Chinese county brutally slaughtered 50,000 dogs in a government-ordered crackdown after three people died of rabies.

Dogs being walked were seized from their owners and beaten to death on the spot. Killing teams also entered villages at night creating noise to get dogs barking, and then beat the animals to death.

Had the government been more attentive and proactive about rabies vaccination, the killings wouldnÂ’t have been necessary. Only 3 percent of dogs are vaccinated against rabies and more than 2,000 people die of the disease each year.

Regardless of culture, the brutal killing of innocent life, human or not, is unacceptable. This must not happen again in the future! It is essential that the Chinese government place an emphasis on widespread rabies vaccination to ensure human health and prevent the unnecessary loss of animal life.

Sign this petition to call on the US Ambassador to China, Clark T. Randt, to urge the Chinese government to adopt rabies prevention as a rule.
deadline: 8-3-2007

Dear Ambassador Randt,

I am deeply appalled to learn that officials in a southwestern Chinese county brutally slaughtered 50,000 dogs in a government-ordered crackdown after three people died of rabies.

[your comment here]

This was not humane euthanasia. Dogs being walked were seized from their owners and beaten to death on the spot. Killing teams also entered villages at night creating noise to get dogs barking, and then beat the animals to death.

This is an extraordinarily crude, coldblooded and lazy way for the Chinese government to deal with disease. Had the government been more attentive and proactive, the killings wouldn’t have been necessary.

Health experts say the brutal policy pointed to deep weaknesses in the health care infrastructure in China, where only 3 percent of dogs are vaccinated against rabies and more than 2,000 people die of the disease each year.

This must not happen again in the future. Regardless of culture, the brutal and unnecessary killing of innocent life, human or not, is unacceptable.

As an American, I ask you, as my Ambassador, to urge the Chinese government to stop this type of government-sanctioned animal cruelty in general, and more specifically urge them to adopt a rabies prevention program that will prevent rabies outbreaks in the future.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

There is a consequence for killing life. All that is done will have effects that return, whether good or bad, unless the mind is totally pure, keep in mind there are no exceptions to this.

We don't need to kill ALL the dogs because three got rabies. It's not the dogs' fault they got the rabies for one, and the ones that don't even have rabies don't need to be killed. A simple rabies shot can prevent a lot of this. What has the world come to that we went from killing humans for no reason that now we need to turn to the defenseless animals... Humanity has lost its humanity.

even if you relly need to kill animals (with good reasons of course)...do it fast and humanely...make sure they don't feel any pain...don't we humans have feelings for God's sake??!!

This absolutely unacceptable. Vaccinate the dogs, DON'T kill them. A simple rabies shot would eliminate this issue.

It's easy to prevent rabies. It's called getting your pet(s) vaccinated!! If anyone reads this, you should know that China also kills cats and dogs for their fur and mislabel it so other evil people aren't offended when they buy fur (AKA some one else's skin)

Rabies prevention is much more important than mass animal slaughter. If you got the situation under control you would not have to murder all of these innocent animals.

How is punishing the very thing WE caused the right thing to do? These dogs did not bite these people because they wanted to or had something against them! Their sickness led them to biting these people, to causing these deaths, and the SICKNESS was what we caused. THIS IS WRONG.

This was a senseless slaughter. The chinese government only took the easy way out. Had they not been afraid to pay for shots, this wouldn't have been a problem.

Please do something about this. There is no excuse for this horrific treatment. Beating the dogs to death in the street! How can any country consider themselves a civilized nation when they behave like this?? Most espcially when there are treatments for this disease!

Rabies is a brutal disease and the people who suffer from it literally do suffer. It causes a lot of pain and rabies vaccinations are important so nobody has to go through it. Also, if no person gets the disease, then there is less of a chance of the animals that spread the disease to be mass-murdered.

This is DISCUSTING. How on earth can you take peoples pets and kill them infront of their owners? Those people should be totally ashamed. STOP IT NOW! Its not the dogs fault and if only 3 people died why cull 50,000 dogs?

oh my god. are you insaine?! yes the prevention is extreamly important for people, and awareness is exteamly important. but the slaughter of innocent dogs, for the sake of 3 poeple getting killed. THREE. it's madness. HOW MANY DOGS did u kill? for the sake of what... so that one more person does get rabies from a dog. vacenations are what u SHOULD HAVE DONE IN THE FIRST PLACE. i understand that it many not seem important to you that one kid from the US is telling u this, and i understand that its a cultur thing but, what u did to those poor animals breaks my heart, because i have two dogs, and they are very important to me. just because they mean nothing to you, doesn't mean that it wont to the OWNER of said dogs. just because three people were affected by the virus, u brutally killed them. that, isn't right. thats a horrible, horrible choice to make on your part, and makes me respect and love my country even more.
