Support the Proposed Ban on Plastic Grocery Bags

Target: San Francisco Board of Supervisors
Sponsored by: Care2
Help encourage San Francisco to lead the way in reducing global warming emissions by banning plastic grocery bags - and other cities may do the same.

Plastic bags eat up fossil fuel, litter streets and choke wildlife. What's more, it is estimated that plastic bags can take between 500 and 1000 years to decompose!

The Board of Supervisors have proposed a ban on plastic bags for large grocers in San Francisco. If this law were passed, large stores would have to offer customers bags made of recycled paper, plastic that can be composted or bags that can be reused. Violators would be required to pay a fine. The city's own Mayor, Gavin Newsom, endorses this bill.

According to a study by the UK-based Ban the Bag, only 0.5% of plastic bags are recycled. This means most bags are being thrown into waste dumps, where they will remain for hundreds of years.

Show your support for San Francisco's ban on plastic bags, so that other cities may follow suit. If you are a U.S. resident, a copy of your letter will also be sent to your state Governor!

Success!

We are so happy to announce that San Francisco has passed the Plastic Bag Ban bill ten to one! Non-recyclable plastic bags will not be distributed in large grocery or pharmacy chains. Thank you all for your letters! Click here for more petitions.

Dear San Francisco Board of Supervisors,

I am writing to encourage you to pass "Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance."

As a leading city in the United States' efforts to improve our environment, San Francisco can set an example for other cities and show that you are committed to reducing global warming gases, litter and harm to wildlife.

The plan will amend the "San Francisco Environment Code by adding Chapter 17, sections 1701 through 1709, to: (1) require the use of compostable plastic, recyclable paper and/or reusable checkout bags by grocery stores located in the City and County of San Francisco; and (2) provide for penalties for violations."

[Your Comment]

Please pass this bill and begin paving the desperately needed path toward a cleaner, more environmentally-friendly America.

Thank you.

You are a large and important city in our country. If YOU ban these killers of animal and earth then other cities will want to follow your lead. Stay with your progressive reputation and be one of the first to save the earth in such a big way.

Plastic bags may be recyclable, but in many communities, these bags may not be included with other household recyclables for curbside pickup. Even for those of us who care to make the extra effort, it is inconvenient to save these bags to bring them back to the stores for recycling. So… what happens to these bags? - they either end up going into landfills anyway, or blowing around the streets as TRASH. Please lead the way to a nationwide ban on plastic shopping bags. It is time for Americans to rethink our disposable society, and move to an ecologically sustainable way of life.

We must stop being so lazy and uncaring... the impact on the environment as a whole because of this ridiculous way of shopping is criminal. Too many animals suffer because of this too, as previously mentioned by the caring person who saved the duck from choking. Please use either paper bags or take your own canvas bag, or backpack - in fact, backpacks are BRILLIANT for this purpose... I use them and they leave your hands free to carry other stuff, answer your phone, or whatever, and they´re much more gentle on your back!! TRY IT!

California already has issues with pollution (especially in the big cities)so this would be great help to improve the state. Also, many trends come out of San Francisco......so start a trend that is great for the earth!!!!!

I once had to save a choking duck from a plastic bag wrapped around it's neck and foot while my children watched crying for Mommy to save the duck. Luckily we were there had we not been it would have died for sure so please do we have to be so lazy that we want these crazy bags all over.
