Save Yellowstone's Bison: Stop the Senseless Killing

Target: U.S. Department of the Interior
Sponsored by: Care2.com
Yellowstone National Park is home to America's last free-roaming buffalo herd, a reminder of the great American West. Yet these buffalo are needlessly killed when they leave the borders of the park by state officials who fear the animals will spread brucellosis to cattle, even though there has never been a single case of a buffalo in the wild spreading the disease to cattle. More than 3,000 of these buffalo have been killed in the past 15 years.

Even worse, our government is spending taxpayer money to kill bison that migrate out of Yellowstone to the Horse Butte Peninsula - in the name of protecting cattle – even though there are no longer any cattle grazing on the peninsula.

Local landowners and conservation groups are urging the federal government to stop killing bison immediately on the Horse Butte Peninsula and to undertake a new environmental impact study to update the current bison management plan. Please urge the Department of the Interior to stop the slaughter of Yellowstone's bison now!

I am writing to express my opposition to the trapping and killing of bison on Horse Butte Peninsula. This killing is senseless and a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Cattle no longer graze on the peninsula – the last remaining cattle grazing ranch was recently purchased, and the new owners have removed the remaining cattle and declared the land open to Yellowstone bison. Continuing to trap and kill bison under the guise of protecting cattle from brucellosis is wasteful and wrong.

I urge you to stop the killing of Yellowstone's bison on the Horse Butte Peninsula until an environmental impact study is completed to assess necessary changes to the Interagency Bison Management Plan now that there are no longer cattle grazing in this area and the local landowners support grazing bison on their land.

Sincerely,

These Bison are a national treasure. In the 1800's, they became virtually extinct as a result of the white man's desire for their hides. They have been given refuge in Yellowstone and we should do all that we can to preserve them, not kill them.

What are you thinking?? This animal was here long before we came to this country, it's NATIVE to the U.S. We came close to eliminating this magnificint animal by over killing in the mid 1900's please, please just leave them alone!

Hate to say this but once again this sensless killing of buffalo is due to the almight dollar. Cattle is an excellent source of revenue for these cattle companies, therefore they lobby the government, the government says "of course we will kill these defenseless animals in order for you to maintain your very important revenue source" and low and behold these pencil neck silver spoon fed babies in washington issue the order to kill these innocent, defensless treasure of an animal. Why not if they dont do this then they will not make their payment on their new BMW's. This makes perfect sense... Not.. Come on government take a positive stand on the environment for a change and give up your million dollar houses and BMW's in order to serve your people..

Wild bison don't recognize artificial boundaries and we need to pursue cooperative agreements to create corridors for them to utilize when they move off protected lands. Taxpayers should not be asked to provide funds for such a management action that is devoid of logic and purpose.

Killing one kind of animal to protect another kind of animal business is ridiculous. Business controls too many aspects of life in America; it's time for business to serve America without ruling our lives.

I worked in Yellowstone for several summers and grew to love the regal grace of the bison who graze there. I am appalled that our government would support the senseless killing of of some of the last remaining icons of historical frontier America. Stop this now.
