Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.

The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.

We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

Dear [Decision maker],

The soaring food prices both at home and abroad are causing the global food crisis to reach epic proportions. I urge you to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

For the world's poorest people in developing countries - who spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food - the situation is even more devastating. Already, 854 million people are hungry, but the rising food costs mean an additional 100 million people could fall further into poverty.

We cannot wait. Please release funding immediately to address this growing global crisis.

Sincerely,

we have got to take action, it is time to look towards other resources. There are plenty of alternate source that can be use to help our economy run more effciently. But first off we have got to help those in need, it is in humane to let others suffer because we as a country have made poor decisions. Have a heart, every little bit counts!

I cannot afford to feed my children as it is. I am a single mom working a full time job and receiving little or no child support for my children. I receive $101 a month in food benefits from the state. My income at the moment is roughly $800 a month from work and I get another nearly $200 from a pension fund my father had set up. I pay about $185 a month in child support for my son who lives with my ex husband and cannot understand why my food benefits aren't higher. Is our government tryin to starve the working poor to death? What has the "Land of the Free" come to now?? There is no reason why I should have to pay $4 for a gallon of milk and over $2 for a dozen eggs. It's ridiculous and it needs to be stopped before the working poor and the even less fortunate than us starve to death!!

The poor are getting poorer due to your laws and taxes already. Who are you to try to actually kill them by denying them food?
