Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.

The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.

We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

Dear [Decision maker],

The soaring food prices both at home and abroad are causing the global food crisis to reach epic proportions. I urge you to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

For the world's poorest people in developing countries - who spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food - the situation is even more devastating. Already, 854 million people are hungry, but the rising food costs mean an additional 100 million people could fall further into poverty.

We cannot wait. Please release funding immediately to address this growing global crisis.

Sincerely,

Please release funding immediatley to address this growing global crisis. Food shortages. Rice, wheat, corn ect. And we must stop giving farmers so much insentives to using grain for ethanol(fuel). We must start feeding people. Not worrying about fuel for are cars.

I believe all people have a right to access food that can sustain health. With health comes extended productivity and partnerships rather than an epidemic of starvation.

the only way to decrease the cost of food and housing is to decrease populations (supply and demand). people have bred themselves out of water, land and food and soon a planet. Get real: mandatory birth control.

This money would be infinitely better spent than on Bush's insane, needless war.

Food is the most basic and essential thing needed for life. Affordable food is even more important than affordable gas and homes.

As well as emergency funding of disaster assistance, please pay close attention to the sources of the problem. Growing food in order to burn it as fuel doesn't make sense. Investing in renewable sources of energy, conserving energy, etc. etc. does. Yours sincerely Helen Carter
