Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.

The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.

We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

Dear [Decision maker],

The soaring food prices both at home and abroad are causing the global food crisis to reach epic proportions. I urge you to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

For the world's poorest people in developing countries - who spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food - the situation is even more devastating. Already, 854 million people are hungry, but the rising food costs mean an additional 100 million people could fall further into poverty.

[Your comment here]

We cannot wait. Please release funding immediately to address this growing global crisis.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

I would like to know how many of the people in congress are really facing the critical issues all of us are facing in this country, let alone those who we have allowed to become invisible who are starving all over the world? We build houses and strip malls on farmlands that should be used to provide food for the poorest of the poor in our country and also throughout the 2nd and 3rd world nations - How are people expected to go to work in an atrocious public transportation system that makes us drive our cars to work - to get paychecks that are depleted at the markets because the cost of transportation is affecting the overall cost of food, medicine, clothing, etc. This country is turning into a country where the wealthy continue to reap the profits of big oil corporations - who probably have never experienced a day or want or need in their lives - and the rest of us - who struggle every day just to get by - Makes me sick!

The cost of food is affecting everyone. With food and gas costs rising at the same time, this is a crisis, especially for those with limited income. Better management of the food supply is needed, not adding people to the public assistance rolls.

The more money we spend at the food store the less we have to improve the economy..The rising oil prices are taking the rest.. We need action now not a committee to discuss it further..

So the depressed, hungry and desperest of our people can eat. Otherwise we have a real crisis. Hunger must not be this, we have the means for help. You CAN see to this! Please consider the trickle effect. Babies dying, mothers too weak to care for them, less work for the hungry and sick, too. Think of your family and what it would mean to you.

More and more people in this country are going hungry. The elderly cannot afford to buy the drugs they need and feed themselves now. Something must be done to help them.

People will revolt when food becomes scarce enough. Food banks are handing out junk food now. There are no beans, rice, oats, or flour. Cheese, butter, and milk haven't been handed out in over a year. Meat, even tuna or potted types are a thing of the past. If we don't end this war we will all be starving by the end of the decade.

There needs to be intervention at the highest level to address this serious problem .. Fossil fuels are diminishing , petrol prices have risen, the cost of foodstuff is soaring and without aid given to people and also countries most affected will be a death sentence to millions...
