Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.

The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.

We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

Dear [Decision maker],

The soaring food prices both at home and abroad are causing the global food crisis to reach epic proportions. I urge you to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

For the world's poorest people in developing countries - who spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food - the situation is even more devastating. Already, 854 million people are hungry, but the rising food costs mean an additional 100 million people could fall further into poverty.

[Your comment here]

We cannot wait. Please release funding immediately to address this growing global crisis.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

There is no reason that you should vote to give farm subsidies to millionaires in the United States and pinch pennies for people staving overseas.

I am only signing this with the stipulation that we must see to our own LEGAL TAX PAYING AMERICANS FIRST!!!! If it were not for my having a good year hunting we would have had no food this winter at all. And let me tell you it is only possible to eat venison alone for so long before you go crazy from wanting and needing a more diversified meal plan with veggies and some starches. Our pantry has been empty for several months, and I am not seeing any way to fill it anytime soon. Gas costs are taking 90% of the money I dont spend on my monthly essential bills. It is time to look at feeding our OWN COUNTRY so we will have the strength in the future to help the rest of the world!!!

It is inconceivable to me that we would allow this to happen. It is not because of demand and supply but because a few profit seeking stakeholders want to insure a financial cushion for themselves.

Proverty stricken countries are constantly on National News, wanting Americans to help these areas, I'm not against it however, we have a severe problem in America with our starving families and individials. The ecomony is getting much worse. For instance, my own family doesn't have money to pay for food and assistance is not an option. My mother receives $560.00; she has a choice of eating or getting her meds, and that not mentioning she can't afford to live in her own home with such a small amount of income. Other family members don't have income at all so some are getting OLD food from a local grocery store that throws the "Out Dated" stuff, even meat, out. I am so dishearten with the way the system is set-up. No one in the US should have to live like this and under these conditions while our "Hierarchies" are living "HIGH ON THE HOG"' while their pocket books continue to buldge from them having stock in the Oil companies; which drives EVERYTHING UP! How could the President or Congress place a FREEZE on gas prices when it will prohibit their pocket books from growing. Wake up Congress... This is our country that your distroying.
