Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.
The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.
We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.
We took action on “Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!”!

Working families can barely afford to eat a healthy, balanced diet. I don't want to give up nutrition just to make ends meet. Please help us insure all people are able to sustain a healthful diet.

As a wealthy country that wastes enough to feed all the developing nations put together, it is our responsibility to come up with a plan to help those most affected by the rising costs of life-sustaining nourishment.

We need to this as one of the solutions. We also need to stop the production of ethanol, as that is driving up food prices, destroying the rain forest and contributing even more to Global Warming.

Sadly the biggest killer in the world today is starvation, please don't listen to those fat preachers who say they represent Jesus, instead do as Jesus would and helpout the needy. Thank you.

The middle class is diminishing in the US and all around the world people's standard of living is decreasing. We cannot speak of morality without action. We must help all people maintain and increase their standard of living - not the opposite.

The link between corn and ethanol and the increase in food costs is absurd. We have so many creative ways to create fuel. Whatever happen to American ingenuity? Food crops should remain for food.

And this crisis doesn't just affect people in developing countries--more folks are going hungry here in the US as well, as evidenced by increased demand at food banks. US food stamps programs are also in need of revision, when obesity and malnutrition co-exist due to lack of affordability of nourishing foodstuffs.
