Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.

The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.

We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

Dear [Decision maker],

The soaring food prices both at home and abroad are causing the global food crisis to reach epic proportions. I urge you to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

For the world's poorest people in developing countries - who spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food - the situation is even more devastating. Already, 854 million people are hungry, but the rising food costs mean an additional 100 million people could fall further into poverty.

We cannot wait. Please release funding immediately to address this growing global crisis.

Sincerely,

Whether or not the general public is deemed worthy to such privileged information, we are heading towards a monumental food shortage and price increase. This can and will end up being a major reason for much hostility and potential chaos moving forward. It is in congress best interest to support the general public in and reducing prices on food and gas to allow for a calm and easy future moving forward. If one person cannot afford to eat, they are put in a situation to become an issue either to the ones whom can afford, or to those whom can be taken advantage of easily. Help to lower the cost of food, so we may have enough to eat in safety and peace.

How long will it be before the Food Stamps that we get in the US to help us cover our food costs become depleted of its funding resources? How long will you wait until people begin kiling each other off for what little food they get? How long will it be before all the governments of the world unite and take care of the people they represent? We ALL need to pitch in and help each other grow- startng with us first. As they say, when one prospers and shares, all prosper. Don't let this continue.

Using food for fuel - corn for ethanol - is wrong, unjust and harmful to our planet. Food belongs to the people.

It is not only a crisis elsewhere in the world, it is a crisis here in the United States. With all that is happening right now, people shouldn't have to worry if they can afford to eat today or not.

This issue was already critical before the Myanmar cyclone disaster. Now it is even more urgent.

Food is more important than gasoline. Stop subsidizing farmers to grow crops for fuel.

I am a full time college student with no income whatsoever, except my financial aid/student loans. It is ridiculous when, Even with NO INCOME, people are STILL ineligible for food stamps. Something needs to be done...BAD!!!
