Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.

The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.

We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

Dear [Decision maker],

The soaring food prices both at home and abroad are causing the global food crisis to reach epic proportions. I urge you to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

For the world's poorest people in developing countries - who spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food - the situation is even more devastating. Already, 854 million people are hungry, but the rising food costs mean an additional 100 million people could fall further into poverty.

We cannot wait. Please release funding immediately to address this growing global crisis.

Sincerely,

Simply put: Americans eat to MUCH, third-world countries eat too LITTLE. Let's find a balance! Fund food today!

Inaction on the part of Congress will be even more devastating than Hurricane Katrina has been for the Gulf Coast states because of extreme poverty in countries across the globe. As the richest country, we are in a position to help families in developing countries.

Bush has murdered over a million Iraqis and now he is murdering even more people because of the massive debt, falling dollar, soaring gas prices, and food prices going through the roof. Stop Bush and his policies of death.

Feed the world. It's time this country considered itself as one with the universe, and shared its wealth. Quit embarrassing us!

We have the means and ways to make sure no one goes hungry in this world. There is enough for everyone. Let's use our abilities to influence this crisis and end hunger on the planet once and for all. There's just no excuse for this with the knowledge that we possess. Sustain the planet and it will sustain us.

The soaring food prices are killing the poorest children and their families in our planet. You must act promptly and release the funding aid to the millions of people that are starving.

Do we need another mall or bank or condominiums? Maybe people that have money buy second and third homes and shop for new clothing. Maybe they can afford the amount necessary to have a savings account that doesn't get deductions? Do we need more car lots? Are all those cars really selling? Who can afford the gasoline to go to work? The war on the middle class is going well...
