Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.

The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.

We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

Dear [Decision maker],

The soaring food prices both at home and abroad are causing the global food crisis to reach epic proportions. I urge you to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

For the world's poorest people in developing countries - who spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food - the situation is even more devastating. Already, 854 million people are hungry, but the rising food costs mean an additional 100 million people could fall further into poverty.

We cannot wait. Please release funding immediately to address this growing global crisis.

Sincerely,

We have to help those with the greatest need. But, we need to watch where we send aid so that the governments involved do not just take the food or the money.

We are also becoming a country of a food crisis. When a person is turned away from a church and is told they only serve the first 12 families this is a sad day in America and in Texas and to everyone. The church told me that due to the high cost of food they could not give food but to the first 12 families....The center in Downtown Austin, The Arch has $3 million in funding and only 30 beds for women who are homeless and hungry. One woman who had luekemia and was about to give birth was turned away and told the beds were full. She and her baby died. Another man who had surgery on his nose was turned away telling him there was no more room. A sad day in America. The well to do go to their homes and gorge themselves with their food and frills while the gap between the hungry and poor and the well to do grows larger and larger.

Let's face it, growing corn for Ethanol use made a few people wealthy and sent most down several rungs on the poverty scale. Let's be fair and honorable and help those in need now.

Basic necessities of survival should be cost efficient, not the opposite. Please help reduce this rising cost of food for all people of the world. Thank you!!
