Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.

The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.

We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

Dear [Decision maker],

The soaring food prices both at home and abroad are causing the global food crisis to reach epic proportions. I urge you to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

For the world's poorest people in developing countries - who spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food - the situation is even more devastating. Already, 854 million people are hungry, but the rising food costs mean an additional 100 million people could fall further into poverty.

We cannot wait. Please release funding immediately to address this growing global crisis.

Sincerely,

I don't understand what the problem is with rising food costs. Doesn't that just mean that the farmers are finally getting paid more? They've been underpaid for decades. Probably centuries. And isn't everyone else's salary rising too? So why shouldn't farmers get paid more as well? How greedy everyone is. And if everyone is going to get the rising salary that they want so they can be rich, well then that means that if we want a good education system and lots more from our gov't, well we have to pay higher taxes too. Either that or cut all the jobs that our taxes pays for, in which case we wouldn't be getting a very highclass life style. And if everyone is getting paid more then of course prices must go up so the manufacturers and the store owners can get paid more too. And if everyone gets paid more( including the farmers) then they can spend more and keep the money flowing. Now we just have to make sure that we can eliminate the third world countries by making sure that they're all becoming rich too. But how is that possible when the rich are rich because of all the money they get off the poor? With no poor how could we have any rich? the yin and yang must balance. So i guess with rising prices for our food, the poor farmers are getting paid more, and our rich are having to get slightly poorer. Then we'll end up with the ideal situation....everyone middle class. So make sure that all the business we do with African countries and other third world countries, whether it is for food or anything pays those poor countries more. All prices should rise. Not just food. Gas prices are certainly rising too, and I'm sure soon there will be a lot more prices rising. I guess we'll just have to become more modest. Awwwwwwwwww.

Food is a human need. We are the richest nation on earth but we have millions who go to bed hungry each day. This is unconscionable.

How is the common family supposed to get by with the high food prices in addition to high fuel prices?
