Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.

The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.

We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

Dear [Decision maker],

The soaring food prices both at home and abroad are causing the global food crisis to reach epic proportions. I urge you to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

For the world's poorest people in developing countries - who spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food - the situation is even more devastating. Already, 854 million people are hungry, but the rising food costs mean an additional 100 million people could fall further into poverty.

We cannot wait. Please release funding immediately to address this growing global crisis.

Sincerely,

It's impossible to put the needed nutrition on the family table. This will eventually lead to diseased bodies, and in some cases death.

I urge all members off the legislative branches of US government to stop the use of corn and grain in bio-diesel fuels. Farmers in the grain belt should not be paid to not grow corn and grains. The USA should be doing everything in their collective power to help keep the cost food down for the poor of this world.

We have a responsibility as a leader in the world to help those less fortunate. It is the right thing to do and the decent thing to do.

You better stop that earmarking crap and quit letting Bush WASTE all this money. Us regular folks cannot deal with healthcare, gas, education, and now food costs. FIGURE IT OUT OR SOMETHING HAS GOT TO GIVE.

This is all quite simple; food prices have escalated to the point that people are starving to death. In a country where we actually pay farmers NOT to grow, how can we take the position that we are a nation of superior moral standing and compassion while these people are suffering. Our own people are suffering; these others are dying. Please, let us show who we are as a nation of people by reaching out and releasing funding at once.
