Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.

The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.

We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

Dear [Decision maker],

The soaring food prices both at home and abroad are causing the global food crisis to reach epic proportions. I urge you to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

For the world's poorest people in developing countries - who spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food - the situation is even more devastating. Already, 854 million people are hungry, but the rising food costs mean an additional 100 million people could fall further into poverty.

[Your comment here]

We cannot wait. Please release funding immediately to address this growing global crisis.

Sincerely,

We need to consider people in the USA first. Where are other Countries in the quest to feed the hungry? We can't do it for the whole World. PS There should be a war on hunger.

i am a single mom of two little boys and it is so silly that a simple jug of milk is now over 5 dollars, it is so hard to feed and cloth my kids and the government is doing nothing to help out, instead of doing what is best for the ecomnomy you do what is best for the government and that right there is what is wrong. the people of this world need to come first. we do not need more tv shows and better, "hotter" cars so that people think that they are fitting into the place we call our home. we need to make a stand and help out the people in need, please hear us.

A hungry world is a world in turmoil - there can be no peace where people are desperate.

There is enough food on the planet to feed everyone, but it is not always in the places it's needed. Funding is necessary to get food to those who are struggling with hunger.

The health of our families and children depend on affordably priced food. With gas and heating prices so high, this surely should be addressed now.

Also, by stopping the subsidies to American farmers, we can move closer to meeting the needs of the starving people here and abroad by increasing production. The demand is there, and it won't hurt the bottom line of the producers.

What a disgrace - that the richest country in the world is allowing gouging of its citizenry in the most basic areas of life - food, medical care, energy. You're a disgusting group of pariahs and should all be fired.
