Congress: Address Rising Food Prices Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
Americans are feeling the pain as the cost of living rises. The cost of a barrel of crude oil has doubled in a year, reaching a new record, and higher oil and energy prices affect the entire chain of food production. In 2008, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent. That's nearly doubling the already steep increases of the last three years.

The food crisis hits harder in developing countries, where many people already spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food. Before this crisis, 854 million people worldwide were hungry. As many as 100 million people could fall further into poverty because of soaring prices.

We cannot wait until the next appropriations cycle comes in October. People are hungry now. Urge Congress to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

Dear [Decision maker],

The soaring food prices both at home and abroad are causing the global food crisis to reach epic proportions. I urge you to release funding immediately for emergency disaster assistance so that we can move quickly to get food to those in need.

For the world's poorest people in developing countries - who spend up to 80 percent of their income to buy food - the situation is even more devastating. Already, 854 million people are hungry, but the rising food costs mean an additional 100 million people could fall further into poverty.

[Your comment here]

We cannot wait. Please release funding immediately to address this growing global crisis.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

This matter should be treated with utmost empathy, considering what this would feel like if it was you who had no food, no means to obtain an adequate amount of food for survival, and were unable to feed your own children. We the people urge you to please do the right thing. Many will be so very grateful.

Unlike the politicians, us regular folks are not ungodly wealthy. The rising cost of energy and food, which the economist regularly do not factor in for inflation, reduces or eliminates disposable income thereby effecting directly impacting the GNP. A smart politician would understand that there are more poor people than rich people and that run away energy and food cost are a threat to the financial stability of the country.

We cannot stand by and watch others suffer. If you have an ounce of humility then you will recognize the need of those without food.

when people can't get their basic needs met it creates a desperate situation that creates further problems for families. please assure families don't need to worry about something as basic as meeting their families food needs.

It used to be your mother would guilt you into finishing your dinner by saying 'there are starving people in China!'. Guess what? Keep up the rising food prices, and mothers will be telling your children 'there are starving people next door!' Or worse yet, not be able to, because they ARE the starving people next door.

Billions are being wasted on funding for a stupid war that we shouldn't have gotten into in the first place, while people in our own country and abroad are going hungry because of skyrocketing fuel and food prices! What's wrong with this picture? We need to put the money where it belongs-in helping those who truly need it! We can't keep letting the working-class and poor be stretched even further when they can't afford the basic necessities in life as it is!

A small decrease in farm subsidies would provide help to the poorest farmers in our world whose crops feed the world's hungry.
