Because They're Worth It: Keep the Body Shop Green!

Target: Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, CEO, L'Oreal
Sponsored by: Breast Cancer Fund
Protect the planet. Oppose animal testing. Support community trade. The Body Shop's core values have always distinguished it from mainstream businesses - and made it an icon within the progressive community.

Last month, this pillar of corporate social responsibility was sold to L'Oreal, the world's largest cosmetics company known for its popular brands such as Maybelline, Kiehl's and Lancome. Now, we're at risk of losing an important ally in the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

To date, over 300 companies have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, a pledge to replace chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other serious health concerns with safe alternatives. The Compact is being promoted by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a coalition of women's health and environmental organizations coordinated by the Breast Cancer Fund. Shockingly, our government allows the $35 billion beauty industry to use unlimited amounts of chemicals in everyday products such as lotions, shampoos and make-up with no required safety testing whatsoever.

The Body Shop signed the Compact in 2004, but L'Oreal refused and thus far, has made no effort to replace or even acknowledge the toxic ingredients in its products.

L'Oreal's acquisition of The Body Shop won't be official until May 1st. That's why we must act now to ensure that L'Oreal honors The Body Shop's commitment to safe cosmetics!
deadline: 4-21-2007

Dear Sir Owen-Jones:

I am writing today to express my concern about L'Oreal's recently announced plan to acquire The Body Shop.

[your comment here]

The Body Shop's passionate commitment to protecting the planet and steadfast focus on healthy and sustainable practices are what distinguish it from mainstream businesses. What's more, its desire to act as a force for positive change in the marketplace has made The Body Shop a respected model of corporate social responsibility.

Recently, The Body Shop demonstrated its commitment to women's health by signing the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. In signing the Compact, The Body Shop and over 300 other companies from around the world have aligned themselves with the goals and values of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and pledged to only sell beauty and personal care products that are made from safe and non-toxic ingredients in every global market they serve.

I am deeply troubled that L'Oreal and other cosmetics companies that women trust are selling beauty products that contain chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, infertility and hormone disruption -- health problems that are on the rise in the human population.

As the CEO of the world's largest cosmetics company, you have the opportunity to lead an entire industry in a direction that protects women's health. That's why I'm writing to urge you to respect and honor The Body Shop's commitment to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and to making safe, non-toxic, healthy products for all of us.

Finally, I would urge you to follow The Body Shop's example by signing the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, signaling your own corporate commitment to removing toxic ingredients from all L'Oreal product lines.

Sincerely,
[your name]

I have made a commitment not to use beauty products that are tested on animals. Animal testing is unnecessary and wrong!

the body shop is one of the only places i shop for cosmetics & beauty products - the true beauty of this store is its cruelty-free & green philosophy...please don't change that for the body shop as it will lose a lot of customers!

I will not purchase any products from companies that conduct testing on animals. Shame on companies who do and on consumers who just don't care. You are not "civilized" and are without compassion.

Using animals for testing cosmetics is an abomination and the ultimate definition of VANITY.

Customers have come to trust the Body Shop to have animal friendly products and I hope that you will continue this. However I am saddened by this news and will no longer be shopping at The Body Shop, as they are now owned by a company that still tests on animals.

I have been buying Body Shop for years, because I felt I could trust it. I refuse to give my money to a company that participates in any sort of animal testing. It was such a good step forward to refuse doing that, why would they want to move backwards? They will only lose money and support, not to mention make a strong statement that leads us to believe that no, the Body Shop is *not* different from any other company, and no, they don't care about remaining a safe, friendly company.
