Because They're Worth It: Keep the Body Shop Green!
Target:Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, CEO, L'Oreal Sponsored by:Breast Cancer Fund
Protect the planet. Oppose animal testing. Support community trade. The Body Shop's core values have always distinguished it from mainstream businesses - and made it an icon within the progressive community.
Last month, this pillar of corporate social responsibility was sold to L'Oreal, the world's largest cosmetics company known for its popular brands such as Maybelline, Kiehl's and Lancome. Now, we're at risk of losing an important ally in the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.
To date, over 300 companies have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, a pledge to replace chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other serious health concerns with safe alternatives. The Compact is being promoted by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a coalition of women's health and environmental organizations coordinated by the Breast Cancer Fund. Shockingly, our government allows the $35 billion beauty industry to use unlimited amounts of chemicals in everyday products such as lotions, shampoos and make-up with no required safety testing whatsoever.
The Body Shop signed the Compact in 2004, but L'Oreal refused and thus far, has made no effort to replace or even acknowledge the toxic ingredients in its products.
L'Oreal's acquisition of The Body Shop won't be official until May 1st. That's why we must act now to ensure that L'Oreal honors The Body Shop's commitment to safe cosmetics!
We signed the “Because They're Worth It: Keep the Body Shop Green!” petition!

Animal testing for cosmetics is inexcusable. There are alternatives to animal testing and I urge you to use these highly technological alternatives. Animals should not have to suffer for cosmetics of any sort. Cruelty for vanity is out and I urge you to follow the numerous companies that have quit testing on animals.

Like many Body Shop customers, I use their products because of the lack of chemicals and carcinogens found in it's products. I will no longer shop there if this should change.

I remember years back reading that L'Oreal had signed an Agreement with PETA stating that they would stop all animal testing. Well, I guess they LIED!! I don't buy animal tested products and will not buy L'Oreal and will never again by Body Shop if this goes through.

The only reason I shop at The Body Shop is because of the principles they have demonstrated. Dedication to the environment, animal rights, and most importantly positive images of women The Body Shop uses, is what will keep me coming back as well as referring friends and family.

I have been a member of the Body Shop for 5 years because of their commitment to the community and their opposition to animal testing. Should this change as a result of L'Oreal I will not hesitate to discontinue use of these products and encourage others to do the same.

It is disheartening to continue to see socially responsible companies get gobbled up by corporations. First Lands End by Sears, now The Body Shop.
This is a great opportunity for L'Oreal to show respect for the integrity of the company and for the consumers of The Body Shop's products.

I have been a Body Shop customer for some years in large part because of the business commitment to safe products, and good enviromental practices. If your company does not continue with the Body Shop business practices I will no longer purchase products from the company.
