Because They're Worth It: Keep the Body Shop Green!

Target: Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, CEO, L'Oreal
Sponsored by: Breast Cancer Fund
Protect the planet. Oppose animal testing. Support community trade. The Body Shop's core values have always distinguished it from mainstream businesses - and made it an icon within the progressive community.

Last month, this pillar of corporate social responsibility was sold to L'Oreal, the world's largest cosmetics company known for its popular brands such as Maybelline, Kiehl's and Lancome. Now, we're at risk of losing an important ally in the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

To date, over 300 companies have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, a pledge to replace chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other serious health concerns with safe alternatives. The Compact is being promoted by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a coalition of women's health and environmental organizations coordinated by the Breast Cancer Fund. Shockingly, our government allows the $35 billion beauty industry to use unlimited amounts of chemicals in everyday products such as lotions, shampoos and make-up with no required safety testing whatsoever.

The Body Shop signed the Compact in 2004, but L'Oreal refused and thus far, has made no effort to replace or even acknowledge the toxic ingredients in its products.

L'Oreal's acquisition of The Body Shop won't be official until May 1st. That's why we must act now to ensure that L'Oreal honors The Body Shop's commitment to safe cosmetics!
deadline: 4-21-2007

Dear Sir Owen-Jones:

I am writing today to express my concern about L'Oreal's recently announced plan to acquire The Body Shop.

[your comment here]

The Body Shop's passionate commitment to protecting the planet and steadfast focus on healthy and sustainable practices are what distinguish it from mainstream businesses. What's more, its desire to act as a force for positive change in the marketplace has made The Body Shop a respected model of corporate social responsibility.

Recently, The Body Shop demonstrated its commitment to women's health by signing the Compact for Safe Cosmetics. In signing the Compact, The Body Shop and over 300 other companies from around the world have aligned themselves with the goals and values of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and pledged to only sell beauty and personal care products that are made from safe and non-toxic ingredients in every global market they serve.

I am deeply troubled that L'Oreal and other cosmetics companies that women trust are selling beauty products that contain chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, infertility and hormone disruption -- health problems that are on the rise in the human population.

As the CEO of the world's largest cosmetics company, you have the opportunity to lead an entire industry in a direction that protects women's health. That's why I'm writing to urge you to respect and honor The Body Shop's commitment to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and to making safe, non-toxic, healthy products for all of us.

Finally, I would urge you to follow The Body Shop's example by signing the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, signaling your own corporate commitment to removing toxic ingredients from all L'Oreal product lines.

Sincerely,
[your name]

Please use animal and people friendly products. Natural compounds are better for the environment and everything in it including us.

Having just very carefully surrendered 3 Yorkies to a wonderful rescue I appreciate more than most the loss of marvelous friends. I did this to insure the quality of life my friends/family deserved. The loss of their playground as a result of Hurricane Dennis was devastating but not as much as my having to say goodbye. These creatures are deserving of a much better fate than being used for experimentation. They were my best friends, always ready to love and brighten my day.........

Please honor the comittment The Body Shop has always had and make their values your own! Testing stuff on animals and making their lives so horrible is not good values nor good ethics. More and more people are getting on board and wanting to protect animals against such horrors, so please help but commiting to good values and not testing your products on animals!

I shop at the Body Shop because I respect the company's commitment to not test on animals, support community/fair trade initiatives and their environmental responsibility. I will no longer buy Body Shop products if my money is used to support L'Oreal, a company whose ethical standards I do not agree with. The Body Shop has proven that it is possible to have a successful global corporation and brand name while also maintaining ethical standards... when will L'Oreal get on board?

Please respect The Body Shop's commitment to no cosmetics testing on animals. You will be able to sleep better at night and the animal kingdom will be grateful.

I have always supported the Body Shop and their products and very much admired their stance. However, I will no longer be a Body Shop customer nor will I purchase any other L'Oreal products, unless their position changes.

The Body Shop has represented a progressive, moral cosmetic choice, and I have enjoyed using their products for many years. I have also boycotted L'Oreal products for many years specifically due to their position on animal testing and potentially harmful chemicals in their products. With this purchase of the Body Shop by L'Oreal, regretfully, I will no longer purchase items by The Body Shop unless L'Oreal will take the progressive step of signing The Compact for Safe Cosmetics. I would urge L'Oreal to join the over 300 companies that have signed, and commit to a more ethical and progressive position on animal testing and harmful chemicals. In this, the 21st Century, it is time for all of us to abandon the archaic cruelty of animal testing and the foolishness of toxic chemical use.

I have never purchased anything made by L'Oreal because they test on animals and will discontinue my monthly purchases at the Body Shop if you do not honor their way of doing business. How sad the business was sold.

It's simple: keep Body Shop's commitment to the Compact for Safe Cosmetics or lose our commitment to Body Shop.

How do you expect us to sleep at night knowing that by using your product we're harming innocent animals? Especially since testing on animals proves absolutely nothing as far as human safetly is concerned...!!

Taking over the Body Shop means taking over their responsibilities. I will not shop at the Body Shop or purchase L'Oreal's products until I know that their standards have been upheld.
